Finally… I got it!I finally landed the last piece I needed for my daughter’s bike, I built it up with full 7 speed XT, however all I had was a DX rear derailleur. I didn’t feel like finishing the build with that DX albatross. A buddy needed a 9 speed rear shifter after he wasted his, I told him that I had a Deore Mega9 shifter that he could have. In return he gave me “this old bike from a garage sale” in exchange. I picked it up last night and my jaw about dropped to the floor, that old bike turned out to be a 100% original 1987 Panasonic Mountain Cat MC7500. The top-of-the-line model with a lugged frame made with Tange Prestige (just like my old Stumjumper and my Alien) and full XT 7 speed grouppo. The best part wasn’t landing the XT rear for pee-wee’s bike, it wasn’t finding the original “Flower petal” XT threaded headset still there and in great shape, but the Panasonic still had the original XT “Bearclaw” pedals aka Shimano PD M-730… my absolute Holy Grail of favorite pedals. Everyone still has the newer 1993 to present XT platform pedals, my wife has a set on her bike, but no one has the XT Bearclaws. They were only available in the complete XT grouppo from 1987 to 1993. I snapped a couple pictures, I didn’t get a good one of the pedals but here is a link to Velobase… some great pictures of the oversized platforms with rounded cages.

I figured this to be my most significantly lop-sided trade ever and my buddy was totally stoked to get his bike rollin’ for a group night ride last night.
p.s. Yes, those are double water bottle cages on the down tube, none on the seat tube, wacky 80’s designs!!!

No way brother! It’s only the second day of Fall… the flowers and the butterflies and all that other crap! You’ll have that thing built, snap some trail pics, and enjoy those memories while your Cuda hibernates.

Thanks guys but let’s not get carried away… remember it was my crass nastiness that chased away a few members. Anyone remember Niika? I think she said I was the worst person on the planet (
) for how I went off on Fluffypuffer, but I wasn’t going to sit by and let that turd disrespect my brother Mix. I’m glad to help anyone on this board if I can, it’s no big deal, I’m sure you guys would do the same in a heartbeat!- September 22, 2012 at 8:59 pm

Hey brother,
First things first, congrats on the new job and the added dough!
I’ll kick in to your build, I have a new set of Avid levers that you can have. They came with my BB7 mechanical disc drakes that I ran on my 96’er/69’er build. I ran PAUL cross levers because they can be set up for cantilever (I ran in the back with a set of PAUL Neo-Retro canti brakes) or v-brake/mechanical disc (the BB7’s that I ran up front). You are more than welcome to have them. I’ll look around, they need the barrel adjusters, I gave the pair to my buddy after his got messed up. The small USPS flat rate box is like $5.75, cover the postage and they’re yours. Let me know…
Peace,
-D-
p.s. The levers are an exact match to the picture, minus the fact that they are missing the black barrel adjusters. The missing adjusters do not stop the levers from working, but it’s the fact that you ‘ll have no adjustability when your new brake cables begin to stretch. Gotta get some adjusters… do you have any spares that you can pull from? Like I said, I’ll look around for a replacement pair.

For all the doping and substances circulating, one thing holds true for me… the chemicals did not make Marco descend well… Marco’s gigantic UOVA (Italian for huevos aka eggs aka you get the point
) made him downhill like a madman!!! He may or may not have been the best up the mountain but there has never been anyone as good coming down… and drugs/dope had nothing to do with his fearless descending and technical ability! Long live The Pirate!!!- September 22, 2012 at 3:46 am

Don’t forget that Contador was found guilty of doping too and subsequently banned. He had egg on his face for talking mess about Lance doping and then he got caught himself… sucker!!!I still think that doped up or not, Marco Pantani was the greatest climber (possibly debatable) but without a doubt he was the greatest descender ever!!!
Viva il Piratta ! ! !
You know you’re watching someone special descending when the BMW moto can’t keep on him!!! Please excuse the the quality and the cheese music but enjoy his brilliance as he yards out on the cameraman!

That’s a good question Mix, I’m guessing not because it is a prep for paint and metal filler. I don’t feel like it’s ever reacted with anything aside from rust, so I don’t believe it will harm the paint. You could certainly try it out on the bottom of the bottom bracket shell and no one would know. Just a thought…- September 20, 2012 at 11:03 pm

@ctk wrote:I’ve just been looking at the Tour podium finishers.
If Lance is stripped of his titles Ullrich would have 4 wins! And I think Bjarne Riis has been stripped of his? Thats 5 for Ullrich. Ullrich also finished 2nd to Pantani… so 6! ๐
Other people who have finished 2nd to Lance are Beloki, Kloden & Zulle.
Ullrich would get none as he is an admitted doper who has already been stripped of his wins. I might be wrong but I believe each person you named is also been caught doping. That’s the problem with stripping Lance, anyone who was good enough to podium was doping… the winner would be the 5th or 6th place finisher in some Tours! Madness!!!

Mixalive’s prep methods were spot on but I differ in what to do about the rust. Having done a dozen old cars in the last 20 years, I swear by Jasco Prep and Prime. You simply have to brush this stuff on, dunk your parts, or in your case fill the tubing. This stuff converts rust from ferrous iron to iron phosphate, in other words it changes the chemistry of the rust back to steel (that’s a little oversimplified but you get the idea). Leave it over night, drain the frame, discard the polluted solution, let dry for a few hours and repeat if the rust is really bad. Here’s the link:
http://www.wmbarr.com/product.aspx?catid=103&prodid=221
Before you get into any of this or spend money of chemicals, check for bubbled paint on the chainstays and around the bottom bracket… if you have some, do not assume that they are surface rust. Use a stiff wire or ice pick to open the bubbled paint, poke that wire around and see if you have a complete rust through (i.e. cancer). If so, recycle the metal or make a wall trophy out of it. Sorry brother, cancer in the stays is nothing to mess with, the frame is wasted!
Good luck and keep your fingers crossed!
