    Gotta love any type of clandestine ‘Cuda behavior… +1 for doing it up illegal and +1 bonus point for getting away with it!!! Fences do a good job keeping the idiots inside and feeling safe… they don’t keep determined individuals out!!! When are they ever going to learn? Suckers!!!

    Only way it would be worth the doing is spare parts from the bin and the person you’re gifting to picks up the tab on the housing/cables and whatever else it needs like tubes and tires. I can’t stand it when people leave bikes outside, it encourages thieves! He needs to spend the dough if you’re doing the build, that’s the only way it’ll be worth anything to the guy. Uber cheap is the deal on a bike like that… don’t waste any money!

    Absolute piece of sh*t bike… stay away brother! That Sony “Solarspeed” road bike is a nasty chunk of straight up gas “black” pipe that wwas made by Rand Bicycles. They mass produced disgusting promotional junk for everybody back then and none of it is worth spending any money on! Even if the this one cost you nothing, free is still too much. Run away pee30wee and leave that junk to someone else!

    Right on brother! Give ’em what they want, so you can get more of what you want… riding time! Nothing convinced my wife about my bike needs more than having her ride with me. She loves riding for the same reasons I do, and if I want to go hit up a quick 30 minute ride or a 3 hour crit with friends, I don’t catch grief because she gets it. C’mon Mix, embrace the squishy seat, you’ll get more out of it than she will and hopefully she falls in love with the Cuda and wants to ride all the time! We are always going on family rides, even if it’s just through the neighborhood, does the family well!!!

    Yeah… never made it that long… most of my severance packages involved being escorted out of the building! I guess technically I did take a severance packet back when I was loading semi trucks for Nabisco in college, I had this piece of sh*t supervisor that always gave me the worst manifests… that night I’d had enough and I went up into his crow’s nest office to get to the bottom of it all. He got in my face as soon as I stepped through the door, not being one to give an inch back then, I beat the sh*t out of him and headed straight to the parking lot… as I knew I wouldn’t be collecting any of my promised employee package! I went from that incident right into my first job working with troubled kids and I’ve never looked back. This year marks 20 years working with at-risk and special needs kids… I think that may have been the best ass-kickin’ of my life… it’s served me well for two decades!!! 😆

    The bike was an impulse purchase, Craigslist got the better of me… don’t get me wrong, I’m stoked to have it but I’ve already owned a ’83 and ’84 and let them both go because the bikes ride like beach cruisers. I guess I was just curious enough to be optimistic and go for it. The amount of originality was what hooked me and I couldn’t let it be, especially since tig welded ’82 Stumpjumpers don’t pop up everyday. Should be a fun project, I’ll start a different thread… didn’t mean to be a board terrorist and hijack pee30wee’s thread.

    Oh, my buddy who has had many expensive play things, cars, boats, women, etc., he has a motto these days… if it flys, floats, or f*cks… it’s cheaper to rent it!!! 8-)

    This is the bike for you Vinny… not a single Shimano part on the bike!!!

    I picked this up last night from a guy in Los Angeles, well worth the drive and time spent collecting it! I’ve owned a 1983 Stumpjumper and a 1984 Stumpjumper Sport, both were lugged frames, but Specialized had flooded the market by the time each were released. This 1982 is a real score, tig welded (pre-lugs) welded by Toyo in Japan, close to original condition. It’s basically a Tom Ritchey knock off, this Stumpjumper cost $750 new, that was half the price of a custom Ritchey. Kind of cool little fact, the Smithsonian Museum has a 1982 Stumpjumper in their permanent collection, first production mountain bike. I’ve got a few things to put right and I may never get the tires or seat correct but it’ll be fun hunting and riding.

    Since there were not mountain bike specific parts yet you see the use of some French touring parts (brakes and cranks), Japanese parts (hubs, shifters/derailleurs), motorcycle sourced brake levers, BMX stem and pedals……must have been a nightmare to put together these early bikes with parts from so many different sources.

    God damn man, that’s ironic!!! Sorry to hear that brother… get beyond the initial nerves and hopefully with a clear head something better will show itself and it’ll be better than it ever was! In the last two years, three of my friends all went through your same situation… each made themselves bulletproof to outsourcing… they each became their own boss. Willywill, enjoy the time off with the severance funds, hopefully you can ride and get some irons in the fire, then kick off the new year with a plan for success! I’ve seen the steep hills you’ve climbed in the rain, this is a cake walk… you got this one! The Cuda family will have you in our thoughts. Take your lovely lady out and celebrate this new chapter that is about to unfold!

    Thanks gang! I am looking forward to hitting the trails, luckily I still have some time to spare and prepare for trail riding. My wife wants to start her out on some fire road, loose rock and some sand but nothing crazy. Peewee likes watching the bike shows, especially those guys that ride around in an old bus (Cuda style) and bomb hardcore trails all over North America. She is thinking that’s what it’s all about, I say this because she hit me up yesterday about where her White Brothers fork was and why it wasn’t on her bike. That’s when I was really glad I built up the rigid 96’er, I pointed out that my bike was rigid and without suspension. “Oh, that’s how we start, right?” Yep, cutie bug, that’s how we start… right on, she bought it! That should give me the better part of a year, maybe two, before she has a “matching Barracuda like mom’s” (my A2L) and really gets after it. I’m planning to document as much as I can, so she has something to look back on. Mine are all memories, my parents never took pictures of anything I did… boring old school pics and my sports team pics… no action shots. Nothing cool to look back on, I’m not going to that same mistake!

    Naw… she already said she can’t wait to pull her kids around in a Burly trailer, too many great memories in a Burley from her pre-riding days! From 18 months old, she was strapped in trailer, and loving the wind in her face… she has been hooked for years. This Barracuda is her 6th bike, she started on a 10″ wheel, then moved on to a 12″, a 16″, a 20″ banana seat Schwinn, a 20″ Parkpre Team BMX race bike, and finally the 26″ Cuda (can’t forget the 700c Specialized Globe track bike that I’m building right now = #7). I fell in love with bikes when I was 3 years old… my parents and my older sister rode around Lake Tahoe one summer for our family vacation. I was in the kid’s seat on the back of my dad’s light blue Schwinn Le Tour; they went out and bought 3 matching brand new Le Tour bikes for the trip. The speed, the wind, and the freedom were awesome, such a different experience as opposed to being in a car! There was never a question as to whether or not my daughter would ride, the uncertainty was how much she was going to love it!

    Ha-Ha, funny man! The thing is, I know full well that you are correct, and I am very thankful that she got her mom’s looks! She got her height and artistic nature from both of us but she got my build and her mom’s beauty. Any boys get bold with her, she’ll knock ’em out… we work out every single day on the heavy bag, we box, and we do mixed martial arts together. Kickin’ A$$ with a beautiful smile!!!
