You got it Brad, that’s the one I’m speaking about using. I assume you’ll use a standard seat clamp, you’ll back the clamp bolt out and insert the Surly hangerin the opening and reinstall the clamp bolt. The hanger is made to dangle but once you have the housing and brake cable installed, it’s the perfect upgrade to the silly brake cable donut that came on most ‘Cuda frames for the rear canti cable. Plus the additional barrel adjuster is nice to have on top of it being stainless steel, so it’ll always look nice. I ran the same hanger on my ’88 Schwinn Cimarron LE restoration… a nice clean solution!- August 13, 2013 at 3:29 pm

Everyone was looking to increase the braking power, think downhill racer using 100 year old technology. Your brakes are a good design but limited to that era and that particular frame feature. You can simply get a standard straddle cable and a seat post bolt cable stop like the one Surly makes.- August 6, 2013 at 12:37 am

It was a good weekend, I finished up my E-stay tribute (to John Parker & John Tomac) bike that my daughter helped me get together. The bike is a blast! It performs beautifully on the pavement as well as in the dirt but it really shines as a gravel grinder. The remote DKG Shift-Ease shifter mounts with the XT 7 speed pods are a dream! Yep , that’s what I had in mind for pee-wee’s Cuda but the tiny cable guide was so small that there was no way to drill it out for a pinch nose derailleur ferrule… that’s why I ended up with Teflon tubing instead of a ferrule and housing like I planned.- August 3, 2013 at 7:24 am

That’s rad! I wouldn’t give it a thought if I were you unless he suddenly takes up baking or cooking without having any prior interest… then you should let your wife’s cat or you neighbor’s barking dog sample everything first!!! If all’s well with no paws up, then enjoy the treats! Unless you’re planning on goin’ out Liberace-style and being buried with your Cuda(s), your butt will not be the last to grace your beloved Comp!

Oh believe me, I tried ultra hard to get her to stretch and be good with the ’88 Easton Reflex… I had every intention of starting her out on that bike. However, that frame has a 14″ seat tube with the more traditional geometry and a much less sloping top tube, she could barely get a toe down versus being flat footed with the 12″ Cuda. I’d be waiting another six months to a year, I couldn’t see waiting, and besides the A2Z paint is already jacked up as compared the the mint condition anodizing on the ALX99. She was seriously bummed too, she really wanted it to happen but she is smart enough to set that aside in the interest of riding now instead of waiting.

Hey gang-My daughter took her first ride around the neighborhood this week on her A2Z, she loved it!!! Graduating up from a 20″ to a 26″ was no problem, dropping the coaster brake for brake levers was no issue, and she took to gears with ease. She did so well bombin’ round the neighborhood, she wanted to hit the trails behind our home, she has been excited about going since I finished the initial build and sat her on the bike (that was still too big) back in November. Last week after I finished teaching summer school I pulled the A2Z down and rebuilt it with newer shift pods and v-brakes, swapped the wheel set, cut down the seat post, and slapped some new tires on the bike. I did all this in hopes of getting some riding in before I start back to a new school year in a couple weeks, I just didn’t know if she’d be ready for such a jump in size and equipment. We’ve got a big day ahead, she has swim team practice this morning at 10:00, we are going to the fair for a few hours, and she wants to squeeze a ride in tonight before it gets dark. She is only 8 years old but she is 4’8″, wears a size 5 shoe, and is now sharing t-shirts with my wife. She is going to be tall… that’s why she is on basketball, volleyball, and swim teams… anything but sitting in front of the T.V.! She is cool with chillin’ out but she prefers doing art while listening to music as opposed to the tube or video games. I’m very lucky!!! I’m having to play catch up from being down for a month with my jacked up leg, I’m definitely off my game and she is rollin’ like crazy!!!
The last photo is my tech shot… I swapped the bottom pull front derailleur and pulley for a top pull derailleur… drilled the cable guide for Teflon tubing, and used the front derailleur cable stops to run the v-brakes. Pretty clean and works very well… no zip ties… I suggest this mod if you are considering a v-brake swap.

Thanks Vinny! Doing well these days, my calf still looks like someone took a 2×4 to it but I’m back to riding and enjoying life again! Cool thing… I’ve got a few photos of pee-wee on her first “big bike” aka 26″ wheel trail ride on her A2Z to post. She loved it and I think I’ll have many years to enjoy the trails as she is only 8 years old… another decade of trail memories ahead before college!I know that I’ve posted this before but here are couple shots of one of Lisa’s early team jersey’s. I bought it a few years ago off Craigslist from Dennis in Durango, Dennis is the same guy who sold me my daughter’s A2Z that was owned by the XX Team rider Eric Sakadinsky. So, based on that NORBA/Grundig photo… how early is my jersey… pre-Grip-Shift…1992?

Hey Grand Poobah-What’s goin’ on with that Ultimate you mentioned over on the Facebook Cuda page? I was taking care of some adds/rejects (the rejects are my personal favorites) for the Schwinn Aluminum Series group that I mod and saw the your posting about the illusive “Ultimate” gem. Any pics or info to share?

Yeah, I know… whatever, I enjoy using my ipod but nothing beats pulling vinyl out of paper sleeves with my daughter! Her favorite right now is the original pressing of the Sex Pistols record. Brings me back to 1978, that was my second record bought soon after the Ramones record… I’m blessed my daughter loves old punk… I couldn’t smash my head against the concrete enough if I had to hear Justin Bieber (aka Justice Beaver, anyone know this?) in my home!!!

Hmmm… 0.06mm is a big stretch when you consider that seat post come in 0.01 increments I have since bought two other 29.4 seat posts for my A2L, that is definitely the correct size. I had a 30.0 Thomson that I hoped would fit but there was no way without ham fisting the thing in and ruining the frame.- July 18, 2013 at 12:37 pm

Your caliper doesn’t lie… Vinny is right, it would have been 112 b.b. but that was when there was nothing but square taper so the manufacturers made way more sizes than what is offered today. Spindle width comes down to two things… rubbing and front derailleur throw. You have to consider the gap with the small chain ring on drive side chain stay or non-drive crank arm on chain stay rubbing. Counter consideration is the throw of your front derailleur, more than a 20 tooth difference between your big and small will likely cause the cage to throw your chain. I prefer the wider width as it tends to give relief to the knee but that’s just me and my snapped ACL.
