    If you’re trying to nail magic gearing, make it easy on yourself and run a half link chain. Sure, it’s a touch heavier but chain accuracy is worth it! Just make sure you get the 3/32nds, not 1/8th, and you can recycle it on your geared set up… like 1×8 simple build.

    The problem with that is if the derailleur is jacked, it would be screwing up at both ends of the cassette… the extremes 1, 2, 7, 8… not in the middle where you have the best chain line and the least stretch on the derailleur springs. You can swap it out but I don’t think you’ll much difference. Hey, go simple, replace the shift cable and see what that does. Better to mess with a $3.00 cable as opposed to a vital component. It sounds more like a minor kink in the shift cable that hanging up in the housing somewhere.

    Forgive me if I’m wrong but I don’t think any Cudas came with 1″ threadless steer tube. Did you mean 1 1/8th threadless? Either way, dump that crappy fork and put a rigid fork on there. I agree with Big V., you already have a nice Cuda with some suspension and gears, go for a singlespeed build… simplify everything and make a giant BMX bike. You can’t go wrong with a cheap 1×1 set up!

    Hey Derek,

    Before you shorten the chain, clean the cassette and check all the teeth, especially those teeth that are ramped, pinned, or at the shift gates. When I’ve wrenched at my LBS to help out the owner, plenty of times the shift issues involve the middle chain ring and those cogs in the middle of the cassette or freewheel. I’m not saying that you’re a weekend warrior but if you bought the bike used, chances are those are the gears that were used the most. If it’s a freewheel, you’re screwed but most cassettes only have the largest 3 (sometimes 4) cogs riveted on the spine. If yours are worn out, let me know, I’m sure I have some Shimano replacements… assuming you have the cassette tool and a chain whip tool to remove the lock ring. Either way, I can help you out with some spare cogs. Otherwise, a new 8 speed cassette at Jenson USA is cheap and they’ll price match any online price. Do a new chain at the same time. Oh, don’t go over 32 or 34 teeth, 7/8 speed rear derailleurs don not like 36 tooth cassettes and have failed every time I’ve seen one installed (even with a long cage rear derailleur).     Okay, that’s not an easy question to answer…

    As I understand it, the early ’93 A2L frames were US made, something to do with them being a team model but once Dos Equis came on board, that became the team model and the A2L was outsourced to Taiwan to fill dealer orders. That’s why the A2L was a 1993 only model, it was developed in ’92 for the ’93 catalog and effectively replaced by the XX Team frame. The only way I know the difference is the Tange “Mountain Bike” MTB Double Butted CrMo decal, you can see the difference mine (1st photo) and the frame on Ebay.

    Looks like a good deal on a clean frame and the shipping isn’t outrageous either.

    That poor rear swing arm never stood a chance! Can you say preload the suspension… *boing* there goes the main seal… so it’s not a total loss, use that shock oil to lube up and ride it home!!!

    Definitely! If the day ever came that I were to repaint the frame, I spend quite a bit of time smoothing out the hideous welds! It’s not everywhere but a few spots look more like a pinched up turd as opposed to a stack of dimes!!!

    The last couple years I wrenched as much as I rode. Family, friends, long time old faithful customers that don’t trust modern shops (i.e mechanics that think 9 speed is old school), and thankfully a few of my own… nothing can replace riding for me… think back to those early days and the freedom you felt. Nothing bike related beats that but building bikes is a real joy! Gets me wondering about the days ahead, what will fail me first? My ability to turn a pedal or my ability to turn a wrench? I hope it’s not the wrench as that would mean an end to my old cars too but if it ever gets that bad I probably won’t be able to hold a handlebar either!!! Call up Dr. Kevorkian and make with that mercy killing… hence, my signature below!

    Right on Zoltan! Way to get after it, you hits some snags, but you got creative and made it happen… that fork will perform fine for quite some time… thanks to your efforts! Great job! You doing what it takes to keep your Cuda rollin’ and that solidifies you as a Cudahead for sure!

    Clean it up and let’s see some photos, maybe ever a trail shot or two, and how about one of yo with your Cuda.

    I used a combination of Phil Wood bearing grease (similar to what was in the fork leg) and a few drops of the Phil Tenacious Oil and it was ultra smooth. My buddy did a similar rebuild and only used the Phil grease and his came out great too. I have not gone without a tube of Phil grease in my bike box for at least 15 years… it is that good!!! Headsets, wheels, even a film of it on the stem, seatposts, watewr bottle bolts… everything is better with Phil (that’s what a buddy said, but he was gay and his partner’s name was Phil)!
