    Overpriced!

He’d never get that price around here! I’ve bought 6 Stumpjumpers and I’ve never paid more than $100.00. Here’s a prime example and this one has been up for weeks:

Damn man, that sucks Derek! That’s an awful lot of effort to go to for a common $15 part, there’s a gang of ’em on Ebay for $15 with free shipping. I’ve bought and sold a lifetime’s worth of bikes over the past 25 years and I have never come across anything remotely as shady as that bullsh*t! You know, it wouldn’t seem to be worth getting your teeth kicked in over a headset! I assume you have his contact info? I’m just nutty enough to go hunt someone down if only on the principle of it all and I wouldn’t blame you if you sussed the bastard out and showed him a thing or two! I would… I’d stomp a mud hole in that mother f*cker!!!

You’re right, that one did hit home for good brother Mix and I explained that in some PMs with him. I jest was silly fun as always, the digs are always at each other, the pictures are just toppings on the sundae if you will. I suppose adding the photos could be taken as bullying but that was never my intention. I know myself as a person and those that grew up up me knew me as someone who defended anyone regardless of social status, race, or whatever it was. Most of my fights have been with bullies, so I guess it’s difficult for me to see this as bullying but it is subject to perception and it was seen that way and I’ll accept it a such. That said, my intent was not to poke fun at the girl as much as it was business as usual with you and Derek.

A few giant bins of spare parts solves most of my trial and errors but I own a decent micrometer (aka indexing caliper) and I measure everything first before buying. Those calipers would solve the outside diameter (O.D.) and the inside diameter (I.D.) of a seat tube and you’ll never get the wrong size front derailleur clamp nor the wrong size seat post. It’s a handy tool but it’s more of a must tool in my opinion.

Don’t sweat it grasshopper, we’ve all it many times and had to learn the hard way, you’ll be fine! Don’t even get me started about English, French, and Italian threading; complicate things with thread pitch on modern versus vintage tooling and bike components. That’s why the “C&V” (classic and vintage) forum on Bike Forums has thousands of daily postings and replies, no one knows all there is to know about the specifics! So, no need to feel like a FNG as we were all there once… be at peace grasshopper.

Before you go jumping in with any other purchases, what you have will work well, you just need a couple tweaks and you’ll be golden. Use those gorgeous AC cranks with the RSX rings, just get a wider bottom bracket. I was going to suggest backing the non-drive side cup out all the way, remove the drive-side cup, and re-install with a spacer and check for clearance. If it’s still not enough, redo with another spacer, and check for clearance. Since time is not on your side, pull your B.B. out and check the size, if it’s a 108 or a 110, get a 121 (hell, go for a 128) and that should clear the rings. Make sure you put grease on all the threads before you tighten everything down for the final time.

Your X-Ray just need to be cleaned and re-greased, all of them get that way with time. I installed a NOS set on a buddy’s bike, clear as day you could see the white lithium grease inside the clear casing. Get some PB Blast or X-6000 (WD-40 will work if you can’t find anything better), over a catch pan or bucket, spray a generous amount of lube into the shifter and run through the shifting. You might need to repeat this a couple times, if you have an air compressor blow out the excess lube and debris. Now you just need to repack the shifter with grease and you’ll be good to go. I’m a big fan of PAUL grease, Phil grease works well too, but try to stay away from automotive grease as it tends to be heavy for the light duty of bike components. I’ve saved plenty of shifters over the years, especially the Shimano STI “brifters” are always gumming up!

The Big Apple must have a bike co-op somewhere near you, they might have various sizes of bottom brackets for you to try out for size and some friendlier bike mechanics than your local shop. I would hit up you LBS for the lube and grease, you’re going to need it with all these projects.

Keep at it brother, you have one of the Holy Grail frames, make those choice parts work!

    Good luck!!!

As twisted as you might think I am, I pulled that image off a Google search, I don’t frequent any questionable sites. Seriously, I can’t and wouldn’t anyway, you have to understand my students… they might be labelled “special” by the education system but some of these kids are off the charts brilliant. Some of my autistics kids have IQs well above 150, since 130 is considered “genius” and qualifies to be a member of MENSA, now add computer hacker to the 150 IQ and there is nothing these kids can’t do online or within a network. Since we share computers in my room, I have to be really careful. I swore off looking up anything (even Ebay) after one of my kids congratulated me on winning my Ebay auction, I didn’t know the results because I got busy and hadn’t checked yet. So, even though we all pledge to respect one another and stay out of the other guy’s business… I still operate under the notion that they are peeking into my online persona from time to time (probably daily). Messing with you guys is as racy as I get… just an aged punker movin’ towards middle age and the downward spiral! My daughter saw the commercial for Life Alert the other day (we laughed) and today when I crashed on my skateboard in the street, she laughs and says, “You’ve fallen and you can’t get up! Ha-ha-ha… Do you want one of those Life Alert necklaces for Christmas?” Good thing for her I was still hamburger on the asphalt and was too jacked up to reply with anything other than a crooked smile.

I suppose if I had to find a nice quality about her, I’d go with her hair… those strands of beauty look to be as healthy and robust as her gums!

Ha- you guys are funny! Thanks but I’m no bike wizard and I certainly don’t know all there is to know. Back in the 80s and 90s I took every bike magazine there was (just like I did as a kid growing up with every skate, punk, and surf zine I could find), I suppose I was a bit obsessed, but what’s not to love about the freedom that bikes provided!

If you want to know a real bike guru, search “T-Mar” on the C&V (classic & vintage) forum on Bike Forums website, that guy knows everything and he can back it up with catalogs. He has been so helpful to so many people, his catalog collection is one for the ages. I had a spray-bombed road bike frame, nothing identifiable aside from the era of the parts on the frame. I loaded a couple pics and listed the parts, within a day T-Mar replied to my inquiry, he narrowed it down to only three manufacturers were making lugged steel road frames in the early 90s. He asked about the drop outs (a single threaded eyelet in the cast drop out), I replied, and almost immediately he nailed it that I had a 1993 Giant Kronos. Now that is pure guru status in my book!!!

Have a great weekend my fellow Cudaheads!
