Another old girl brought back to life, Dirt drops is becoming your trade mark it seem! Not use to the look of the Brooks B-66 saddle, I have always seen the tan Brooks in ……can’t remember the model but they are more slim…how does it feel having the saddle with that much flair ?

Yeah man, for sure, dirt drop bikes are it for me… the only non-drop bar bike that I ride is my full suspension Psycle Werks WildHare. It’s a versatility thing for me, one hand hold versus four. As far as the Brooks goes, the suspension in the seat is plush and the springs do their job by taking the edge off. I ride a standard Brooks B-17 on my Smorgasbord single speed and now that the leather is broken in, the seat is super comfy!

When I saw the headline I was reluctant to open the thread for fear of what might be hiding inside!

That bike would be gone within the hour around here, Stumpy survivors like that gem don’t last long!

I love seeing your XX Cuda on the trail! To know the story behind everything you did to save that frame… it makes for an awesome photo!!! Thanks for sharing, brother!

As far as coyotes go, we get them coming through the neighborhood quite a bit at night and the wee hours of the morning. I know they’re been around when I see a missing cat or small dog flyer on the telephone poles around the neighborhood. I always think about those little pets and hope it went quickly. It’s sort of sad but then they were here first and we encroached on their homes, not the other way around. On a different note, back in the early 1990s when I was doing spray murals around Los Angeles, I sprayed under the name “COYOTE” which stood for Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics…C.O.Y.O.T.E. and most of the work was political so the name worked well for the subject matter.

Anyway, thanks for sharing the cool pics!

Holy cow Mix, those are some beautiful photos! That looks much more like Vermont than it does Austin, Tejas. Yes, I misspelled it on purpose because I live in Southern Mexifornia where “Spanglish” is the practical language. I understand that the water eventually dries up but how many months of the year do you get standing water with lush greenery? How close is that to your home? I could never get of that scenery!

Bike safety and thieving scum bags has dropped on my doorstep. One of my old customers going way back stopped by the house to see if I had any lugged steel frames. I haven’t done much work for the guy in the last few years because he got heavily into modern carbon road and CX stuff. He told me that earlier this week he was riding the paved bike path that goes to the beach when a guy jumped out from a blind corner with a knife and stole his bike. It was a one of the last high end Cannondales (with full Campy 10 speed) before they went full China with everything. The guy is older and not a big guy so there was no chance of fighting the guy off. He said the police did basically nothing, they took a report and gave him the awful stats about how many bikes are returned to their owners.

After showing him a frame, I pulled out my SOG tactical knife, it goes everywhere I go… especially when I ride! The SOG Flash II knife is really great, I’d highly recommend it to all of you regardless of whether or not you already carry. The spring assist blade (“S.A.T.”) is open in a fraction of a second, once open the blade is securely fixed with no slop. The knife was developed by and for the Navy Seals. If my customer would have had the knife, possibly he could have defended himself instead of watching the guy ride off on his $4,000.00 bike.

Here is a link if any of you Cudaheads want to know more:

Okay man, there you go… congrats on committing bike suicide… I mean getting hitched up!!!

All the comments over the years that Terry, Vinny, and myself have made about bikes and our better halves and you decided to still go for it… Big V. is right… you are a mad man!!!

Seriously though, I’m really happy for you and I wish you all the best for the future!

Remember – what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas…
so if you have second thoughts, you’re allowed to leave her there and being 5 big ones up on the slots will cover her Greyhound bus fare back to SLC! Better buy it now while your pockets are full, if your winning streak ends and you’re busted… you’ll have to take her anyway!!!

    Cheers!

p.s. I’m curious, before you called her your “old lady” but that was before securing the noose around your neck… what are you calling her now?

You are right. Things are squirly in the woods. I am packing protection when i ride.

Are those that you’re packin’ ribbed, lubed, or mixed?

Is that where “mixalive” came from… the style of Trojan you prefer?

It was bugging me last night, I knew I’d seen a Redline mountain bike from the same vintage. There is virtually nothing on the web about vintage Redline trail bikes, only BMX from this period. Turns out my memory was correct, the info was at the MOMBAT Hall of Fame website, here is a link:

    http://mombat.org/MOMBAT/Bikes/1990_Redline_44.html

Granted the frame designs aren’t the same but the decals match as do the similar vintage Suntour component, XCD vs XCE. Another thing I found that backs the rare nature of this era frame was on MTBR, the original posting highlights the fact that in 26 years of riding trails in NorCal he has never seen a Redline mountain bike.

    http://forums.mtbr.com/vintage-retro-classic/vintage-redline-mountain-bike-huh-173786.html

Many manufacturers were selling an e-stays bike (likely made by Nishiki, same build characteristics) but it’s the unique pre-lawsuit design of this frame that I think is so cool. I’m loving it, I wish it were my size and close by, it would be in my garage by now!

    Hurry up Derek ! ! !

Headed out to Vegas this morning. :) Much needed Vacation.

Cool man, a well deserved break!

While you’re in Vegas, as long as you don’t waste all your dough in the casino, treat yourself to a super rare Redline as a replacement commuter. Everyone from back in the day remembers Redline for their BMX bikes but for a short time they were producing mountain bikes. The bike is a 1990 Redline “Thirty” and as you can see from the photos this is one of the few that made it through production before GT sued and won over the use of the GT “Triple Triangle” frame design. The frame should be Tange 4130, looks to be all original Suntour XCE group, hard anodized rims (probably Matrix USA), and it includes the Blackburn rack. I always loved the stem on the bike because the cable housing stops in the stem clamp bolt and the cable routes on the underside and over a jockey wheel… pretty slick design! Check the crazy steep head tube angle (just like their BMX frames), it’s similar to a Criterium aka “Crit” road frame, the bike will handle like a Ferrari on Viagra! Derek, this Redline 30 has the perfect geometry for your build!

    Only $59.00 or best offer ! ! !

    http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/bik/4435010378.html

    “REDLINE MOUNTAIN/COMMUTER BIKE HIGH-END..this bike is in great shape..gears,brakes,rims..ready to ride..looks like a tall frame… 702-533-9364 59.00 or best offer…”

The ad was posted earlier today… don’t hesitate… swoop on this rare gem!

Ahhh… yes, that feeling is exactly what I love about bikes! It’s always been there, almost 40 years later, it never goes away! People who don’t ride would not understand, you’d fail if you tried to explain it to them. Why bother? Instead spend that energy having a great ride. Between my dog and my bike, that’s all the therapy I require!

Glad you reconnected with an old friend!

    Cheers!

    Hey Ron,

Good to hear from you my man, thanks for sharing your Spooky! The build on your Darkside is awesome and must just tear it up and be a blast! Most of the Darksides that make it out to SoCal are built up as 26″ BMX cruisers, it’s great to see one put together with a slick geared set up. I’ve always been a fan of small run bike companies and Spooky (like Spot and Smorgasbord) always impressed me by having one foot in the time proven East Coast geometry from the days gone by and the other foot in modern materials and details. It’s great to see a well thought out frame, details like a high bottom bracket, cable routing on top of the stays and away from the muck, etcetera keep you flyin’ down the trail as opposed to doing messing with trail side repairs!

I’m expecting a detailed trail report, don’t be stingy with the lovin’, keep me posted!

    Thanks,

Big V. is right, there has to be some place inside where you could screw in a bike hook and hang the front wheel… it’ll be off the ground and not in the way… best of all it’ll be inside away from those thieving bastards!!!

The big bike scam when I was in college, pro bike thieves would ride up on a beater to the large common area bike racks around campus, they’d act like they were locking up their bike but instead they’d inject liquid nitrogen into the u-locks and freeze it. One swift smack and the u-lock shatters into pieces and they ride off on the choice bike. The only day I ever rode my Zaskar to school, both my beaters had flats (how I don’t know), 6 hours later I came out of the art department and my race bike was gone! The campus fuzz were like keystone cops about the whole thing, almost laughing when I said I wanted them to do a police report for my insurance.

I f*ckin’ hate bike thieves!!! Derek, I seriously hope you come up on the fool that took your bike, when and if you do please show that scum what the sharp end of a kabob knife can do! I’m serious, go Reservoir Dogs on the guy and cut one of his ears off and feed it to him!!!

There’s a special place in hell for rapists, child molesters, politicians, and bike thieves!
