Naw… Ron is a pretty face… besides no 1%’er would be caught dead on a Barracuda… a $10,000.00 hydro-formed full suspension beast with electronic 11 speed that’s what the fat cats with bottomless pockets ride around my parts. The laughable part is my tubby 225 pound “clyde” posterior can smoke those pathetic f*cks on my rigid bikes any day of the week! Sad man, soft as puppy sh*t, hangin’ out at the trail head showin’ off their new whips, wearin’ $800.00 in new microfiber kit, smoked by social hooligan in camo shorts and a Clash t-shirt! F*CK ’em!!!- May 14, 2014 at 1:11 am

Hey Ron, do my old punk rawk ass a favor… if you run into any hedge fund managers while riding in the Hamptons, please crash into them and stomp a new mud hole in that scum!!! My sister is a broker, she told me the top 25 hedge fund managers raked in a disgusting 21 billion dollars last year! Gut the swine!!! I’ll send you my SOG knife with my fingerprints!!!! C’mon man, you’re practically in the clear… just do the bastard!

Hey all,Let me be the the first to welcome John aka “NORD” to the family of Cudaheads! John and I began this discussion over on Bike Forums, he contacted me with a registration issue. I turned it over to “The Grand Poobah” (my term, not his) aka Mark for guidance on the issue and no sooner it was solved. I can’t speak for “Mixalive” aka Terry aka “The Good Mod” but as far as the computer goes… not my strong suit… that’s why he is Sheriff Mixalive and I’m Deputy Barney Fife with one bullet in my shirt pocket. As far as the usual suspects goes, “VPC66” aka Vinny and “Wild Man” or “Derek” aka Derek round out the regulars. If I’ve offended any of the other Cudaheads by not mentioning you by name… too bad… post more often and maybe I’d remember you!!!
Anyway, your A2R looks like a champ! You and I have the same interest in parts, your build lists reads like a compilation of my various builds! No joke, I swear I’ve owned 90% of the parts listed… great minds and all that mess! How is the handling? You have the long travel 100mm Marz Bomber, I ran the regular 85mm Bomber on my A2L for some time and it was good but not great as it was twitchy at speed or on the descents. I look forward to reading a trail report! You certainly have some beautiful country in Maine, I believe you are the only member in Maine, so I’m looking forward to some more trail photos of your adventures!
Welcome to the family, glad to have you along for the ride!
All the best,
-DON-
aka “The Bad Mod”p.s. I don’t want to be a spoiler, so tells us about your other bikes… post non-Cuda bikes in the OFF TOPIC forum or if you have any other Cudas in your future, we’d love to see them!
p.p.s. It’s interesting how different the same fork can look, simply because it’s on a different bike, here is my long travel Marz Bomber on my Psycle Werks WildHare… on your A2R it looks long and on my Wildhare it looks short! Wacky!!!

The grease has probably crystalized… break it down, clean the bearings and the races, and preferably repack with “Phil” bearing grease. While it’s apart and before you repack the grease, check to be sure the the races are not pitted. Sometimes when it sits without use the steel balls bearings will pit indentations into the smooth race surface. If it is pitted, it’s junk and will never be right, cut your losses and buy a new one like an Odyssey or a Tioga… both can be gotten cheaply on Ebay. If Ebay isn’t your thing, try Jenson, Niagara, or Nashbar; someone will have a cheap 1″ threaded headset.Good luck!

@vpc66 wrote:DANG….from the pic’s it looks like the thing was bought then wrap in bubble wrap and put in a nice safe corner somewhere…yea you stole that thing, what was the price again..$100.oo
No doubt, I couldn’t agree more, you did steal it! That 7 speed XT group is one of the best groups that Shimano ever made! From the blacked out levers, to the weight weenie cut away shift/brake pods, and the tougher than most rocks rear derailleur… the group was spec’ed only on high end models…. awesome condition! That group is worth way more than you paid for the bike!

Holy cow, you weren’t kidding about the condition… that bike hasn’t hardly seen the light of day!!!Those Avenir Brahma bars were the hot ticket in the late 80’s as were the Tioga stems (Avenger, P-bone, T-bone, etc.). What gets me is the condition of the rubber on those specialty D.B. grips, they look untouched! Derek, you scored brother… what a killer birthday gift to yourself!
Enjoy!!!

That’s an easy one…MOMBAT is your friend for vintage Schwinn (and Specialized) specs:
http://mombat.org/Schwinn_Specs.htm
1986 Sierra
1987 High Sierra & Sierra
1988 High SierraThe bike you’re asking about is a 1987 Sierra. The color wasn’t limited edition but it was limited to only 3 years and 2 models that came in black chrome. I’ve always been after one but I’ve never found one that was my size, not beaten, nor costing a fortune. The black chrome is a really cool finish! I’ve never understood why they did not do their top model the Cimarron in a black chrome, that would be the one for me!
Check out the cover of the premier issue of MBA from July 1986…
They reviewed the 1987 Schwinn Sierra as a “Banzai” bike but my favorite is in the bottom right corner… how to convert your 10 speed into a mountain bike… I’d love to see that!!!

Happy Birthday Derek… awesome, enjoy the sweet new “old” bike, the perfect gift to yourself, I’m so glad that it worked out!!! Practically unridden gems like that, especially high end models, don’t come along often. I’m stoked you were in a position to make it happen!C’mon man, make with the photos of the new baby, don’t be stingy with the lovin’!!!
Cheers,

p.s. Check the link my friend provided, OEM tires were those Panaracers.

My buddy “frantik” came through with the info as I knew he would…Big V. nailed it, the D.B. Axis is a 1992 model, gray with blue pearl.
Follow the link to page 10 in the catalog, bottom right corner has the color swatch, it has the same double butted True Temper OX frame as the “pro” model but with XT group instead of 8 speed XTR. I forgot that the “silver” XTR hit the bikes on the 1992 top model lines.

His recommendation was to snag asap as that is a steal for what looks to be a totally stock original bike.

Okay, I’ll play along… following good brother Derek’s lead…Heritage goes back to Frederick William I. (aka Friedrich Wilhelm I.) King of Prussia with a healthy mix of English, Irish, and Scott to muddy up the blood line plus a strong showing of Cherokee and Blackfoot to stamp out any nobility…
A native Southern Californian (with family ranching in NorCal since the first homestead in 1860) living in the birthplace of BMX, skateboarding, and West Coast Punk… still defining me to this day!!!

Oooo… nice bike! The Axis was Diamond Back’s top-of-the-line model, it would have had full XT group if memory serves. Vinny you’re right there with the ’90 or ’92 guess. I’ll split the difference and say 1991. Looking at the XT pods, those were the high line XT shifters with the little cut away windows to save weight. I have the same shifters on my ’93 A2L, I robbed them from my ’91 Stumpjumper Comp when I parted it out to sell the frame. If you want I’ll send a message to my buddy “frantik” over on Bike Forums, he is the guru of all things D’back, he can settle it for sure. Since I’m speaking about frantik, I figure I’ll post his newest score… the Holy Grail to a fan of D.B. bike.

Derek, I’d jump on that bike if I were you, it’s rare to find a high end bike that hasn’t been molested!
Keep us posted,
-D-
p.s. I’ve attached a photo of my A2L, notice the little “windows” between the lever and the shifter.
