    Hey all,

I was over on Retrobike and stumbled across CTK’s A2X build… he finished it and ir looks great as a “Dirt Drop” bike!!! I love it as I’ve always been a Johnny T. fan and he won the World Champs on his “Dirt Drop” bike. I’ve attached a couple of pics of CTK’s bike.

    Enjoy!

p.s. CTK, no offense intended man with regard to posting your bike, I just figured the gang of ‘Cudaheads would enjoy seeing your build. My apologies for beating you to post, I just figured you’re busy with your little man… future ‘Cudahead in training! How’s he doing? Do you have an updated picture for us?

    Hey Mix,

Agreed! Not sure sure how many people are brave (foolish) enough to tackle DIY anodizing… unless you scraped up some tweaker from the gutter as they are down to mix up anything!

Man, paying to have something anodized is insane! Way more expensive than chroming! No wonder it all comes out of Taiwan and China but it’s all low grade garbage that you wouldn’t want on your bike anyway… pretty anodized boat anchors! No thanks!

Nice try Mix… good call offering up your Schwinn that you never touch now that you have a stable full of ‘Cudas!!! Remember back a year ago, back to a simpler time when you owned a (single, one, uno, mono) Barracuda mountain bike?

Mixalive, you greedy devil (or diablo since you live in Texas, I’m not knocking it as I live in Southern Mexifornia), trying to land your 5th Barracuda… who do you think you are? Mark???

Sorry, I don’t mean to be blasphemous towards the Grand Poobah, please forgive me oh Great Imperial One… please forgive me Mark… don’t suspend my account! 😥

p.s. How’s the touch up paint coming on your Team XX frame?

Congrats! Great call Cudarider, you scored big time ! ! !

All three of those saddles cost way more than you paid for the lot! Now for those who would poo-poo this deal, yes, they are used… but after the shipping is added on, ‘Cuda is going to have three awesome saddles to try out (and pick the best for feel with the added benefit of being partially broken in) and they only set him back $14.00 each! That’s a bargain! I paid $85.00 for one of those Flite saddles on sale at Supergo 15 years ago and yes I still own it and love it!

    What you don’t believe me?

Selle Italia has recently reissued the classic “Flite” saddle, their best selling saddle to date, check the link:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Selle-Italia-Flite-Titanium-Road-bike-saddle-re-issue-/250861436103?pt=Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a6881bcc7#ht_2200wt_1005

That’s right! A quality leather cover with titanium seat rails will set you back a cool $120.00!!! Cudarider scored the original classic in great shape for $14.00! A sweet deal and there’s no other way about it!

Thanks Cudarider for keeping me in mind… glad I could help… you find that classic Flite or SDG is not to your liking, I’ll gladly take it off your hands and let you recoup some dough!

    Peace,

    Hey Cudarider-

What color is your A2E and/or what accent colors are you going with (if any)? I ask because I’m watching a couple of auctions that I could point out to you based on the color choice. One that’s not a color issue is this gem of an auction over on FleaBay…

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=330592843604&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_1254

I know, what do you need with 3 saddles? Simple, try each one out for a week and rank the 3 best to worst. Keep the two you like the best (one as a back up, since you know how it rides) and sell the third one. I’ll put out there right now that I would buy either the SDG or the old school Selle “Flite” (not the Gel Flite) should you win the auction and want to recoup some dough. I love both of those saddles! I’m pretty sure that both the Flite saddles have titanium rails (it looks like Ti to me on the Gel Flite). I have that exact same SDG saddle on my A2L and it’s an awesome saddle (IMHO).

Let me know if you’re going to bid and I’ll stay out of it. Also, let me know what colors you’re going with and I can tell you about another couple of sweet saddles that are closing in a few days.

    Good luck!

Saddle are so individualistic to the rider, I have each of these saddles presently on one or more of my bikes. I’ll give you my top choice for new and used:

    New

    1. KOOBI – hands down the best saddle I’ve ever owned, not cheap but they last forever! If you’re going to get your wallet out for one, spend a bit more and get the titanium rails… better ride than the CrMo rail KOOBI.

    2. Koski Engineering – almost as good as KOOBI, you still get the leather cover and you save a bit of dough. Same deal as the KOOBI, get the Ti rails, not the CrMo rails, it makes a big difference in the ride quality after a couple of hours.

    Used

    1. SDG – only the titanium rail saddles, like a S2000, full Kevlar cover that’ll last forever and (big bonus) made in the USA. I don’t need any saddles but I never ever pass up a Ti rail SDG from the 90’s.

    2. Specialized Body Geometry – The “Pro” model from the 90’s with the Ti rails and the leather cover (usually some chromed plastic bits too), awesome saddle for the road or the dirt! I have one on the “RASKAL”, the bike I built for Earth Day with the Nishiki Alien frame I bought for 10 bucks and a bunch of spare parts I had in sitting around.

Sorry Cudarider, I have no saddles to spare but I hope this helps in your search. Good luck!!!

The bottom line is that aluminum has a finite life.

Too true brother Mix! My buddy Ben, he’s the wrench at my LBS, he basically said the exact same thing about the 7000 series aluminum to a customer who had asked him about why Santa Cruz changed their frame material. He said the Santa Cruz rep told him that they actually lost money for a spell because they had to warrantee so many frames. That’s also why they discontinued using cast aluminum pieces in their suspension frames. If any of you have riding buddies that roll out on a Santa Cruz full suspension frame… don’t follow too closely 😯 as you wouldn’t want to be too close when the frame “taco’d”!!! Yikes!

Thanks Mix for the nod but this resurrection is all you, my brother! It was great to share in helping you find your Holy Grail Barracuda, conversely I about died when you told me about the crack happening on your first ride… that must have been a sickening day! I give you all the props in the world man, you deserve it! You were the one that set about finding a solution, devising a plan of action, and the execution of said plan… that was all you! Let me say, you are a clever cat, I imagined it would end with a functioning frame but I never considered it would look cleanly done! No one would ever know after a bit of touch up paint.

You didn’t have any background in a project like this, right?

Just to toss this out… have you considered some 4130 inserts for the headset? Given the track record of head tube stress cracks (remember Cudarider’s A2M? As well as the Manitou frames, the Tomac hardtails, etc.), the big difference being you’re staving off a critical problem as your head tube is intact and not in need of repairing.

Anyway Mix, I am very stoked for you… you’ve earned the right to ride that beauty! Maybe you should consider repairing other frames?!!! Ha! Just kidding my friend, now forget about the touch up paint and go hit the trail… a new maiden voyage! Enjoy!

86 big ones! Did someone on here get the NOS ‘Cuda jersey?

Speaking of beef… when are they going to make some big jerseys, like a 3XL, not all cyclists are tiny! Look, I’m 6’1″, I weigh 225 lbs, and I have a 54″ chest with a 19″ neck. I do not fit in a typical XL jersey, especially those Euro-cut ones. My students jokingly call me “fluffy” (but they’re into skinny jeans and having androgynous bodies), my daughter calls me a (teddy) bear, and the little boy next door (2 years old) calls me “rhino”… I do not a tradition cyclist build! Not that I’m jumping at the chance to wear some ridiculously loud cycling jersey but I would appreciate the choice to sport something other that a t-shirt on my rides. Yes, (according to my long time friend) it keeps up the whole punk thing I’ve always had going, but having a choice is always a welcome thing!

I agree, Craigslist people have little to no regard for the person opposite them… I’ve been strung along by sellers and buyers! My buddy says that’s the problem with “FREE”… he thinks Craigslist should charge a membership fee, that’ll solve many of the “Craigslist Flake” issues. His theory is if you are paying for it, you’ll treat it with respect. Maybe… maybe not… I do appreciate the free community idea behind Craigslist and I think there is more “right” than “wrong” on Craigslist these days. I will admit, it’s not like it was in the beginning! People did treat it with respect, it was like your own private little thing and you wouldn’t dare disrespect your fellow CL’er. Oh well…

    Hey Mix,

You’re right, the Salsa Shaft seat posts are nice… very nice! I should mention, the current Salsa Shaft is a (dull) matte black finish, and I am no fan of the new finish. In contrast to the new version, the “early” or “original” finish was a high polish silver (as pictured) or high polish black and both came with a gunmetal gray clamp mechanism. Functionally they are alike… my distinction is purely for aesthetics.

    Hey traghp1-

Cudarider is dead on! Stay away from the long travel forks that dominate the market these days, anything more than 80mm will screw up the feel and handling of the bike. I had a 85mm Manitou fork and hated it, so I switched to a 72mm White Brothers (SC72), and now the bike handles like a dream!

    Good luck!

    Hey Spokane,

My A2L has seen numerous builds over the years… for a long time I ran an XTR 8 speed trigger shifter with a XTR long cage rear derailleur and a 12-28 cassette with 38 front chainring. It was perfect for all I needed as far as light trail (fire road) and around town on pavement… I’m sure you’re going to dig the ‘Cuda set up, it’s a great frame and there are times when less is more! Good luck and let’s see those progress pics.

There is no way I could squeeze into that.. 😯

That replica photo is getting a lot of web-play..

I want to see Mix all liquored up and squeezing into that jersey… a few more drinks and then fighting his way out… Incredible Hulk style! That’ll get some web-play! :D

You know I love ‘ya, brother! 😆
