Thanks for the supporting words and yes definitely it was hard not to spin his neck! You are too right, unfortunately, that the courts would have seen me as the “monster” for being proactive instead of waiting for something horrible to happen and being reactive. Sorry, that doesn’t play with me! Silliness… he would have been in the back of the ambulance and I would have been in the back of the police cruiser. I did nothing more than anyone of you, as fathers, would have done to protect your angel… two of the male cops said they’d have done the same thing… truth! In regard to the MMA stuff, it was nothing like today, there was little money and no fame. It was something to do to keep your skills sharp between boxing matches or kickboxing tournaments. Also, it was much more local, you sort of knew the talent around you; it was not national nor international at that point. It wasn’t my scene as so many of the guys were “tough guys” with something to prove. Too many times I saw “Tank” Abbott drunk in Huntington Beach pick a fight with some poor guy because David (Tank’s real name) thought the guy wronged him in some way. Pathetic!!!
On to happier topics… The Cudaheads on this site are great people! You nailed that one for sure! I won’t go on a few cycling forums for those same reasons you mentioned… too many “experts” and way too much keyboard courage! I respect the guys on Retrobike (I know some of us Cudaheads are members on that forum too) as they seem to solely be about the bikes and helping out. Also, most of the guys on RatRodBikes are cool too, they’re all about building up a bike for the love of building two wheelers. That said, neither of those forums have the “community” that this one does… Mark created a great site that’s full of good people!

Peace,

“…it is a shame, but we all have done it to our selfs,as a father of a 10 year old and a 8 year old…with the freaks today you can not feel safe with the kids in your own yard much less doing like I did as a kid being 15 + miles away .”Man vpc66, you speak the truth brother! Stinkin’ world is full of freaks and nut-jobs!!! Just today I had this thrust in my face… today was the opener for my daughter’s (6 y.o.) AYSO season, on the way home I thought I’d treat her to a new soccer ball of her choosing. So, we stop and head into Sport Chalet, she paused next to some “hula” crap cruiser and I continued on for a couple of steps looking for the soccer section. I turned back to call her, only taking my eyes off her for maybe 5 to 10 seconds, and some f*cking weirdo is walking up behind her with his hand expended like her was going to touch her hair. 😯 I spun faster than I ever did when I was a competitive fighter and launched at him, I caught his finger just as he was about to touch the back of her head! Without hesitation, I grabbed his finger with one hand and his throat with other, I “wheeled” him around to choke him out with his own arm. The bike tech (just a kid) saw all this and yelled to his manager. Moments later, there was a huge crowd but I refused to release my hold. For a second he tried to fight back and struggle, so I snapped his finger since I still had ahold of it in the choke hold. You should have heard him cry like a baby!!! The bike tech backed up my story to the cops, he said he was watching the guy because he was hovering near my daughter. The manager reviewed the security tape with the cop, they said he came 15 to 20 feet to get close enough to be in arm’s reach. They arrested the guy, turns out he had a warrant and they suspected he was on something. They sent me on my way but not before I shook the kid’s (bike tech) hand, the kid begged me to train him in MMA fighting. No thanks, been there and done that.
What really sucks, my daughter had never seen me get angry before nor had she seen me get physical with someone (that’s not who I am anymore) and she was right in the middle of it! She was really scared and confused, she did not want the soccer ball or anything else at that point… just to go home (where she could feel safe). Thankfully, by bedtime, she was over being scared and was more interested in telling grandma (on the phone) that her daddy was her protector and hero.
It’s too bad that our kids are growing up in a world that is so much nastier than the childhood we enjoyed… they deserve better! I drove my daughter to 3 years of preschool, a year of K., and now my lil’angel goes to school all day instead of half day… she’s growing up, a big 1st grader… she may get older but she will never walk to school… never!!!Watch your kids and keep them safe, don’t slip even for a minute! Those bastard predators are out there hunting kids, f*ckin’ sickening… I know the next SOB that gets near my kid is a goner. They had to pry that piece of sh*t out of my arms, the next one (hopefully never) will not be so lucky!

p.s. Give your kids a big hug or/and kiss for no reason… just because, they deserve it!!!

That’s a cool idea, I’m sure he could do the job and it would be gorgeous… however, I’ve grown so spoiled on inexpensive Barracuda bikes! I don’t think I could bring myself to pulling the trigger and placing an order with Tom.
Here’s the pricing info from Tom’s (TET Cycles) site:Pricing
Steel Frames
Basically steel frames are priced by the material from which they are made. Because each one is hand-made Tom can offer many options at the same price. In general here is how it looks:
$975 – True Temper S-3, Columbus Spirit
$875 – Columbus Life, True Temper OX Platinum, Reynolds 853
$825 – True Temper VerusHT, Columbus Zona,Reynolds 725
$775 – True Temper Verus, Nova CrMo
Forks usually go from $165 to $195 if Tom makes one for you.I think for the cost of a fork, I’d rather throw in a little more and pick up this vintage ‘Cuda beauty:
http://portland.craigslist.org/wsc/bik/2581873112.html
92 Barracuda Mt Bike – $225 (Sherwood)
Own a classic! Everything works perfect. No dents or dings. New tires.

)See… for a couple hundred bucks, you could be the proud owner of this A2T and still have plenty of dough in your pocket! True, it’s not an original by one of the greatest builders in the 90’s but it is a sweet turquoise gem!!! By the way, if any of you buy this beauty… you own me a six pack!!!

Just curious…Did most of us on here come to love dirt riding because we had BMX riding in our background? I turned 40 a few months back, so I guess I’m officially a geezer now, but coming up in the 70’s in SoCal was a golden age! It was all about Scot Breithaupt and SE Racing, God, he pretty much created BMX racing! I know I was on my bike every single day, those bikes meant freedom from the parents (but you weren’t really “free” since anybody’s dad in the neighborhood could smack you for being stupid) and endless fun bombin’ around with your friends.
Anybody remember rollin’ up to your buddy’s house and there’d be 8 or 10 bikes in the driveway or on the front lawn? I don’t think there are 10 kids in my neighborhood that even ride! It kinda’ sucks that all these modern “things” have done a bunch of kids over, not my daughter, from the get go she was bombin’ the sidewalks around our home with the clickity-clack of her training wheels as she rolled over the cracks. I take it very seriously about instilling in her a love of bikes, the outdoors, and the awesome freedom that two wheels can offer!!!
Ah man, now I’m gettin’ all misty-eyed 😳
-D-
p.s. For the old-timers, sorry if you predate the 70’s and BMX riding but I’m sure you have your fond memories of your old newsboy bikes… we’re not that different…

Hey Goldenlocks-Welcome to the site! Always good to come across another Cudahead… this is a great forum full of nice helpful people who love Barracuda bikes! Big praise goes out to Mark, The Grand Poobah, who put all this together.
As far as a fork goes, some guys run one of the early Manitou I., II., III., IV., or Comp, these are 55mm-60mm travel forks and they do the job nicely. For me, nothing beats a White Brothers SC72 or the newer version the AC-3/XC-3… they are American made, simple to work on, way overbuilt, and can be picked up pretty cheaply. I’m picking up a XC-3 this weekend for $45.00, back in the late 90’s that fork cost $700.00+. The smaller travel forks can be won on Ebay for under $100.00 (also try YAKAZ and search “White Brothers Fork”, that’s how I found the $45.00 XC-3). The SC has 72mm of travel and the AC/XC has 80mm, both work beautifully with our Cuda frame geometry. Watch out for too much travel, I ran a newer Manitou that had 85mm and it was simply too much travel. It change the geometry completely and made for crappy climbing and sketchy downhilling. If you go to the MEMBERS BIKES section, you’ll see my ’93 A2L with a SC72. I have to tell you, I built and rebuilt that bike trying to find the perfect set up… I finally achieved it with the SC72… I love it!!!
Good luck, let’s see some pics, and feel free to ask questions… I’m probably the biggest A-hole on this site and I can attest to the fact that this forum has the coolest, most helpful members of any bike forum that I’ve ever checked out!

As long as your Cuda isn’t one of the modern pig-iron bikes from China… Durango or New York… it’s a Barracuda and it’s cool with me!!!-D-

Mixalive… you’re the king of fab’n’restoration ! ! !That repair was complex, insanely involved, and you totally pulled it off like a champ! Do you feel like you could do anything with regard to a bike frame? How about building some frames? This story has been a blast to follow… especially when you consider the horrid starting point, all you put into building your repair set up, to the beautiful finished product. I appreciate the thanks along the way but as I stated before, this repair fell solely on your steady shoulders! I can say this, I damn proud of you (your hard work and achievement)… it really paid off in a big way! That took some steelie huevos to start cutting into that frame, you rule, brother!!!
Congrats on the fabulous success, you earned it!
Best regards,
-D-
p.s. Now, go build it…

Hey Sith-Congrats on the new addition! Mary Avery reminds me of my daughter Maia when she was born… same size and weight, sweet face, great color, resting like an angel… you can’t beat that!
Oh yeah, you’re screwed (just like me)! Try sayin’ no to your little angel when she wants something and she bats those eyelashes, “Please…”, you’re done! Just ask Mixalive, he has a little cutie too, she pulls those parental heartstrings to get what she wants. Right Mix?
Here’s a cool thing, she was born on Friday the 5th, take a picture of here every Friday for the first year, it’s amazing how much they change from week to week! You’re too busy living it to notice the subtleties but the camera will remember for you. It’s an awesome thing to see laid out at her first birthday party! Enjoy every moment, she’ll grow up too fast… it seemed like yesterday that I carried Maia home from the hospital and now she’s 6 and going into 1st grade.
Best wishes!

I love that generation Marz Bomber fork, those late 1990’s though early 2000’s Bombers were some of the best forks going for performance and aesthetics. Plus. there ad campaigns were pretty good too. Remember?- August 14, 2011 at 5:54 pm
