    Mark, this site’s Grand Poobah, may have more insight but I heard Big Al gobbled up all the ‘Cudas he could in a sale as Ross was blowing them out the door before they outsourced everything. Maybe it has some truth or it could just be a ‘Cuda (urban) legend.

    vpc66, I agree with you on the copied frame design but I think it goes back one more level to the Catamount bike. In 1996 Catamount came out with what they called a U.R.T. (Unified Rear Triangle) M.F.S. (Mid-Frame Suspension). The Catamount URT MFS came is 3 levels (XTR, XT, and LX for obvious “Shimano” reasons)… the XTR cost $3,50000, the XT cost $2,750.00, and the LX cost $2,350.00. Schwinn did have a 1996 Homegrown with a “Sweet Spot” frame design but I think the Schwinn designers stole the idea from the 1994 Catamount prototype that previewed at Interbike. The bikes are certainly similar in design but the Catamount was considered a race ready bike, I would not say that about the ‘Cuda or the Schwinn.

    I have a 1994 Manitou Comp fork that’s rebuilt and just sitting around, it has a threaded 1 1/8th steer tube though. How long do you need the steer tube to be? Possibly mine has enough steer tube if the threaded section is cut off. I’m almost positive that I have a package of NOS ATI fork boots too. Let me know…

    There is a seller on Ebay that has the A2Z mounts on sale for 6 more days, asking price is $42.29 plus free shipping! I’d be willing to bet the steel frame rear drop outs could be filed smooth and the A2Z would work just fine. I was going to buy a steel disc mount and weld it to my frame but this would save on the repainting costs… I’ll check around and see if anyone has modded their steel frames to run this disc mount.

    Okay, let me try again… is anyone running a one by anything set up? I’ve run them before, I’m just curious to hear how others set their bikes up. Plus, I have a couple of questions about chain line, bottom bracket width, etc., I’d like to bounce some ideas off ‘ya.

    p.s. The rigid fork on my “RASKAL” is off my Barracuda, now the bike gets the rigid Hunter 29’er fork and the Kooka cranks is getting swapped with the XTR singlespeed crank (from my want ad in the Marketplace)… and I’m back to having more leftovers in the garage!

    Success… Craigslist came through again! I posted a “want ad” in the bike section, now I’m the owner of a XTR bottom bracket! The seller ever brought it to his work, which happened to be on the way to the zoo (with my lil’angel), so that saved me the 20 miles each way of gas… man, the traffic too!!!

    I like to have backup spares, so if any of you come across a M952 XTR bottom bracket for $40.00 or less, please let me know. I’d really appreciate it! I almost can’t bring myself to type those words as 40 bucks for a used bottom bracket is kinda’ sickenin’ but when my LBS wants $100.00 to order in a NOS one, I go with the used one! Hell, I only paid $50.00 for the XTR crank with the MRP bash guard and a new Salsa 38T chainring. So, yep… less would be great!!! 🙄

    How can you post an ad on Ebay and get the spelling wrong?

    Especially Marzocchi… clearly this seller has never been a fan of Marzocchi’s ad campaigns over the years! Let’s take a trip to Interbike… they are Italian, so well known for a long history of two-wheeled appreciation. Fabulous displays at their booths every year at Interbike!!!

    First one I’ve ever seen come up for sale! The only bike in the ‘Cuda catalog that did not have a price as it was a custom, one-off build, only made in 1994 and I’m sure it was made by Yeti. We may very well see this frame pop back up in the near future, I have a feeling the three bidders that are fighting it out are after the Ti Rock Shox fork and the WTB brakes. Like the Easton frame, those WTB canti brakes are equally as rare… rare to the tune of $200.00 for a used set about two years ago. The seller didn’t mention it but that looks like a Ringle stem, that round face plate was their design. That bike was someone’s pride and joy, some serious coin was dropped to build that bike! I’d be shocked if it went for less than $500.00!

    By no means am I an expert but increasing the rake and changing the angle of your cockpit will certainly affect the handling. I understand your point about slow speed handling vs. high speed but it seems backwards to my thinking… I want the bike to handle best at high speeds. Long travel forks on short travel geometry frames is simply a bad idea in my book. I think the designers figured out this problem, that’s why every frame these days is hydroformed with a steep head tube angle and curving top and down tubes. This also adds strength at the headtube. You’re asking a lot 15+ year old frame, one with straight butted welds at the head tube, to handle the stress of a long travel fork. The aluminum frames will stress crack first but even the steel frames (especially the light weight steel ones) will pop their welds.

    I approach this from a safety standpoint and doing what you’ve done does not seem to be the best choice, in my opinion, but I am not intended to be personal in any way… I just think it’ll be a matter of time before you waste your frame. The 7000 series aluminum frame, like your Dos XX, is not heat treated. That’s why they went with the 7000 aluminum, it saved on the production time and cost, but it came at a price as the frames (like the Dos XX, the Manitou frames, the Giant Tomac World XC Chapionship, and many others) develop stress cracks. Check out Mixalive’s awesome save on his Dos XX Team bike, it’s a killer story with plenty of pics, and he was running a proper travel fork and it still stress cracked!

    Granted I tossed out a bit more than my 2 cents, so sorry for goin’ on…

    On a different note, yesterday I posted in the MARKETPLACE an link to a XL Dos Equis Barracuda jacket on Ebay. It’s all the same colors and sponsors as your Team frame… would make a cool addition to your ‘Cuda collection.

    Hey Al-

    Well, that’s a hard one to pin down as most of us don’t know too much about the Ross era bikes… a Rock Shox Judy fork would have been the norm on a mid-level priced bike from that era. Had it been low end, it would have had a Rock Shox Indy or a high end would have had a Rock Shox Duke (possibly a Sid). I’m basing that on the fact your bike has v-brakes and (correct me if I’m wrong) an ESP 7 or 8 speed rear derailleur… all that screams late 1990’s or early 2000’s.

    BTW, what state or city are you in, Al? I haven’t been good about it lately but I try to post any good deals on ‘Cudas that I come across. If I know your area, I’ll try to let you know if there are any sweet ‘Cudas in your backyard.

    Let me know if you find a decent price on those Tiogas, I’m always down to snag a set if the price is right. Thanks!
