Funny you should say that…
I work at a “Blue Ribbon” public high school, high academic, comprehensive, nationally honored and ranked… my special needs kids struggle because they are 100% on their own. This was our first week back and I asked about their summers, the usual stories of family travel, but one kid surprised me. He was going to be absent from school Friday because he was flying to London to see some of the Paralympic Games over the long holiday weekend. He was specifically excited about seeing Oscar run. He gave me a “high five” because on our last day of school in June I highlighted what to watch at the Olympics, Oscar specifically. My student was a “gamer” that lived for video games, no exercise, and badly overweight. I almost didn’t recognize him because Oscar inspired him to get off his butt and start living (his words, not mine). Oscar inspired this kid to start an active lifestyle, he said he ran, swam, or road everyday this summer. Here’s the good bit, the kid dropped 40 pounds!!! As a reward for taking it upon himself to make these lifestyle changes, his parents surprised him with the trip to London. Instead of being a PE kid that refused to dress out all last year, he is now in weight training and is signed up to be on the wrestling team.
F*CK YEAH… Oscar is inspirational… he turned this kids life around!!!
Crappiest first week back in 20 years and this kid’s story made it all go away!!! I’m not the only one that thinks Oscar Pistorius is a hero… pretty cool!

Get this, this was on NPR the other morning…
The Paralympics started in 1948 in London as a way to give injured WWII vets a purpose and turn their thankless service into competition that renewed pride and self worth. The 2012 Paralympics takes pride in the fact that 10% of the athletes competing in this year’s games are Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans.
I tell ‘ya what, I had no interest in flying to London to see the games other than to see Oscar Pistorius run. Had I gone I certainly would have hung around for 2 weeks to see the Paralympics… to see some of our war veterans earn some well deserved medals would have been all too worth it in my book!!!

Oscar Pistorius aka Blade Runner just ran his first race in the 2012 London Paralympics in front of 80,000 spectators… he killed it massively! Oscar smashed the standing World Record in the 200m with a time of 21.30! That is on pace to be faster than his Olympic anchor leg that he ran in the men’s 4×100 relay, he ran that 400m anchor leg in 45.09 seconds. Oscar is my f*ckin’ hero!!! That dude is a champion, period!!!- September 1, 2012 at 7:25 pm

@vpc66 wrote:Wow….You were one of the guys that I thought was a X-bike shop guy…..but with all the bikes you have dealt with you might as well have.
You were right Vinny, sort of, I’ve spent years turning a wrench and helping out in bike shops but I was never been employed by one. First was when I was racing on my college race team, our team shop was my LBS (the same one I continue to frequent), the previous owner let us use the stands and tools. I got spoiled having all those specialty tools at my fingertips. A few years later my buddy opened his own shop. I was always there working on one of my bikes or building up something for someone. In exchange for wrenching or watching the shop so he could grab lunch or a coffee, I had the run of the place plus “good-guy” pricing on everything. Again, I was spoiled and that lasted until he closed his doors but I’ve always kept up with my LBS and so on days when the newer owner isn’t there (most Sundays), you’ll find me there building up another whip. Building them is just as much fun as riding them… I figured that out years ago with BMX… I was fixing everyones’ BMX bikes, it was a blast and 30 years later I still love it!!!

@pee30wee@yahoo.com wrote:Is it absolutely impossible to tune a 9 speed shifter for use on a 8 speed cassette?
Yep! It will never be perfect, sorry brother. There are key reasons and secondary reasons why it will always be sloppy… but not so sloppy that it won’t work most of the time. First, a 9 speed shifter pulls less cable because the gear and chain spacing are narrower than a 6, 7, or 8 speed cluster. However, the shifting does work cleanly on most of the cogs because there is so much gear overlap. The secondary things vary from worn teeth up front on the chainrings or in back on the cassette, used chain will have chain stretch that adds to the sloppiness, new vs. used shift cables… both can play havoc on shifter.
It can work, the commuter I just finished for my friend has a 9 speed Deore trigger shifter and an 8 speed STX rear derailleur and both are pulling the chain over a Sugino singlespeed track crank and a 7 speed Sachs (Malliard, pre-SRAM) freewheel. If it sounds like pure mish-mash, it is but my buddy was on a super tight budget. He supplied some of the parts, I had to fill in the rest and make it all come together. Yes, it was a bit of a nightmare but if you take your time and patiently work through the trial and error stage, it can be pretty great in the end.
Keep asking questions, we’ll help in any way possible, and you’ll be bombin’ the trails soon enough.

Ain’t gonna do nothin I ain’t sure about. Hell, if it’s spring ‘for it happens it’s spring. Want to do it RIGHT but I’m not gonna pay retail for none of it. Working on rounding up some shifters, and will use zip ties if needed.

Smart move! To this day, having built hundreds of bikes, I still take my brakes in for a final fine tune adjustment by my buddy at my LBS. Why not let the guy that does hundreds of brake adjustments every week put the final tweak on my brakes? Yes, I can and will do the brakes but I have no trouble letting the professional put that perfect finishing touch on those ever so important life saving components! Especially if it’s a build for someone else, I would feel terrible if a friend or customer were injured because I didn’t set the brakes up properly!

Well done amigo! Pay it forward… the Bike Karma Gods have smiled upon you, a little less Darma headed your way! Hell, you probably just saved yourself from a broken collar bone or some potentially worse form of bike related accident!!! I’ll never take issue with helping a lady in need or someone who is working… it’s the lazy bastards that suck the system dry and won’t work! 🙄 We have 30 million people in my state and 2 million of them don’t work… I hear people defending those numbers all the time, “Only 1/15th of the population… blah, blah, blah” Okay fine, now think of the population of your state… do you go to work? Would you want to pay for 2 million people to stay home and watch The Price Is Right while you’re being the hardworking production citizen we expect everyone to be? 😯 SORRY! 😯 Soapboxin’ again…

I know the guy’s name is Gil (Gil M.). A quick search on Retrobike for “Gil” and “decals” should turn him over pretty quickly. Sorry Mix, I would do it right now myself but I’m pressed for time… the 7 year old is crackin’ the whip!Good luck!
@mixalive wrote:Are you saying my 98 is designed by Yeti? It looks like the Homegrown frame..
Sorry Mix but only the Homegrown Factory and Toyota Team bikes with the Bass Boat paintjobs were made by Yeti. There were some late 1999 and early 2000 frames that had the Bass Boat paint but those were made by ControlTech for Schwinn. The remainder of the 2000 Homegrowns were made by ControlTech but had solid color paint. You’re actually quite lucky brother Mix, you have 2 in your backyard… a hardtail and a full suspension…

Up for grabs is a 1999 19″ Schwinn Homegrown 4-Banger mountain bike frame and front shock in great condition! The Homegrown series of Schwinn mountain bikes have come to have somewhat of a cult following for their unique geometry and bulletproof construction, and 1999 marked the last year that these bikes were made by Yeti. The frame has a carbon fiber rear suspension system, and the shock is a RockShox SID Dual Air.

Hey pee30wee,+1 for gettin’ after it yourself! So many people today can’t do anything… just get the wallet out and pay someone to do it for them! LAME!!! Yesterday at my LBS I was pickin’ up a few bits (finishing a commuter for a friend), this guy comes in on a an all mountain rig, full race kit, body armor, full face race helmet, the works… must have cost $6,000.00 easily! He says to my buddy that works there, “I got a flat.” My buddy offers to let him use the stand and tools, “Just buy a tube and no worries, take your time.” The guy (“Mr. Racer”) starts in about how he doesn’t know how to change a tube. My friend and I look at each other and laugh, thinking the guy is messing around. “HEY F*CK YOU GUYS! LOCAL SHOPS ARE S’POSE TO BE COOL BUT YOU GUYS ARE BIG TIME F*CKERS!!!” Totally caught off guard I apologized as did my friend that worked at the shop. He explained to the guy that changing a tube is simple bike maintenance and they never have to do that type of work for anyone who rides on a regular basis. The kook opened his fat yap and yammered on about all he wants to do is ride his bike… “I don’t want to be a F*CKIN’ BIKE MECHANIC!!!” I’d all but given up on bike riders after that but this thread has renewed my faith that people can do what they set out to do! God, a simple innertube! Not like that hardcore frame saver that Mixalive pulled off on his XX Team bike… thank goodness Cudaheads get after it… not simply roll over and wait for the cavalry to save the day!
VIVA LES CUDAHEADS ! ! !
I’m not a fan of Gripshifters either, give me anything before those lousy bastards! Quick question about your set up… what rear derailleur are you running? Are you planning on sticking with the cantilever brakes? I ask because most 7 and 8 speed Shimano setups were integrated “pod” shifters as opposed to today where most shifters are individual to the brake levers. I don’t recall what speed they are but I know I have at least one set of LX shift pods. Those are for canti brake, though. You can run V-brakes with the pods but you need a pair of Travel Agents (aka Problem Solvers). Check out my A2L in the member bikes section, I ran my 7 speed XT pods with Avid Arch Rival V-brakes. Take your time, don’t rush it or you’ll end up with a bunch of leftover bike parts… a problem but a blessing at the same time.

Patience grasshopper…

It’s possible… I just missed out on a small one in Newport Beach two weeks ago, the seller was only asking $35.00!!! 😮 Something to the effect like, “Old Schwinn that never gets ridden. Just want it of of the garage. Priced to sell…” Now I find myself checking every Schwinn ad on Craigslist. Nope… next… 🙄- August 29, 2012 at 6:26 am

Search decals on Retrobike… there is someone on there that is the king of repop decals. You could also send a message to our good brother, The English Muffin Cudahead, CTK… I think he had some decals made by that guy (I could be wrong but my memory says he did). I have no one local, sorry Mix.Good luck!
Man, give those fools the finger!!!I would love to own another 1997 to 1999 Schwinn Homegrown Factory! Those frames were made by Yeti in Durango during that brief spell after Jon Parker (Yeti’s founder) sold the company to Schwinn. Here are the key nuggets… Bass Boat metal flake paint jobs, must be 6061 aluminum with the sticker on the frame, and no disc brake tabs. If it’s a Bass Boat paint job, but is 7000 series aluminum or has disc brake tabs on the rear triangle… that is a 2000 model, still American made by ControlTech for Schwinn but not a legit Yeti frame. I owned one and it was just as amazing as my ’93 Yeti; it was easily one of the greatest bikes I have ever owned! Please ignore the idiots on Ebay screaming about “Bass Boat” this and that, pay attention to the nuggets I mentioned above and you can’t go wrong! Please sweet Jesus, if you ever find one near you that fulfills the nuggets and it’s not stupidly expensive, let me know. I’d really appreciate it in a huge way!!! I’m a Cudahead through and through… but a Yeti is a Yeti and I’d love to replace the one that was stolen from me years ago.
Over and out…
