    I would try a couple turns on the shifter’s barrel adjuster to take up any cable stretch and then mess with the rear derailleur’s adjustment screws to fine tune the shifting. Any number of minor issues could be the culprit… worn teeth, cable stretch, chain stretch, a bent chain link to be twisting the chain, or…

    No real difference between a CX canti pad and a MTN pad. The big distinction is high quality canti brakes rule in the CX world, as opposed to being “retro” in the mountain bike scene. You will not find a nicer pad than the dual compound Kool-Stop/Mauthauser pad I linked in my previous posting!

    PBR… it’s hard to escape it… between the track bike street races around Los Angeles, cyclocross (and singlecross) races, and the single speed mountain scene, I’ve come to accept that PBR and bikes are probably always going to be partnered. Personally I go for the micro stuff with much more flavor but the ‘ol red, white, and blue of Pabst seems to always be around.

    Well said Sith, nobody with a soul is escaping this one, it’s far too tragic!!! I f*cking hate guns, period! I’m not for taking away liberty though, that’s assuming that you are a responsible person that deserves those freedoms! Sith is right on with the need to secure your weapon if you choose to own! I couldn’t eat anything at work on Friday, it was a going away party for a dear coworker, but everything seemed wrong with the world! I let my last two classes after lunch just have free time to do whatever… the kids felt so lost and confused!

    Like I said, no one is escaping this one!!!

    That happened to me once… only once… I never ride without my Topeak Alien tool and a universal masterlink. It’s happened twice since that first “learn your lesson” and the Alien with the link got me home. Never walk out again!

    If you can find the first generation Alien tool used, buy it! That’s the one I have, it’s been perfect every time, and I’ve had it for 12 or 15 years. The best tool ever, I had many, and the Alien spanks them all!

    Man, what a long day of wrenchin’ on bikes! The bike my customer brought me earlier this week was disassembled by lunch, then he calls to say he wants to change bikes for the grocery getter. Great 🙄 , more work, sure bring it by and we can swap it. The Nishiki Ariel went away and a 1988 Schwinn High Sierra showed up with apologies. The High Sierra was pieced out by dinner (delicious homemade Chicken Noodle soup, salad, and grilled cheese sandwiches), after gettin’ my grub on I mounted the rack and basket. I may swap the stem and bars he wants for something more upright with better clearance. It should be a cool bike, it’s hard to beat an American made Schwinn with fillet brazing!

    Don’t think I could rock the basket but I do take a second look at the rear racks every time I am at an LBS. More than one trip has been made one-handed carrying a 12-pack.

    Sheldon Brown, R.I.P. with happy trails in Heaven, was the guru of all things bike related… he always picked the best performing stuff, not what was expensive or popular for the moment. I had the pleasure of speaking with Sheldon a few times on the phone and he answered a number of my questions on bike message boards. Every suggestion was perfect, the guy really knew his stuff! The bike world lost a great one when he moved on! First off, these Kool-Stop-Mathauser pads are made in the USA, that seals it for me! The dual compounds work amazingly well, I’ve been so impressed, half the price of Jag Wire premium dual compound pads and they stop so much better!

    Thanks for all the comments guys!

    As far as the rack and basket goes, I wasn’t messing around. I have a long time faithful customer that has commissioned at least one bike a year for the last 10 years. The most recent build is a light weight single speed mountain bike. A bike for he and his gal to ride to the weekly Farmers’ Market. A rack for the beer and a basket for the produce. I’m building the bike and he is handling the powdercoating, I should have the rough mock up done this weekend. I’ll snap a progress pic and post it when the bike is together.

    I’m not one for bloody pics but I’ve certainly had more than my fair share of bloody moments in my biking history. I can provide evidence, proof that double cage BMX pedals are a dream come true until you lose contact… then the nightmare begins!!!
