    Ha, that’s funny you should say that Mix! After telling a few people what happened and that the cause was a simple bike crash, seeing peoples’ general look of let down, I started telling people that I was bit by a “rattler” while hiking. Being we do have a number of rattle snakes in this area, the general reaction was mch more pleasing for me as I’ve grown sick of explaining! I’ll be back at work on Monday, I’m actually looking forward to going back as this has been no vacation!!!

    Man Derek, awesome score! That thing is something of a time capsule, with the popularity of “Townie” city/urban bikes these days… I’d think that you’d have a pretty easy selling that gem!

    Don’t beat yourself up over the lack of use by your spouse, most guys I know that ride have bikes for their wives that hardly ever get used. It’s just one of those things, something has to click for them. We were sold as kids on our BMX bikes… instantly lifers… most girls didn’t ride for kicks or maybe they did on a beach cruiser is junior high as a means to get out of the house and away from mom and dad.

    You’re partially correct about me and my love/hate for Trek. I love the older American made lugged Treks, road and dirt, mostly those up through the early 1990’s. I hate Trek’s desire to out-gobble Giant for cycling supremacy, it kicked off in the early to mid-90’s and didn’t stop until the 2004 or so. Think about the important developers that got bought and and basically killed aside from retaining the power of their name to sell parts… Fisher, Bontrager, Lemond to name a few plus some cool CNC/anodized part companies that were put under.

    I actually own two Treks right now, I have a 1984 Trek 460 lugged Tange race bike, and I have a 1992 lugged True Temper OX II frame with the coolest production rigid lugged Tange fork that I’ve seen. Both bikes were produced in Waterloo, WI and there is no way I could reproduce either frame today short of spending a fortune on a small builder. I’ll gladly snag up every USA Trek that I come across that is being sold for a fair price.

    I don’t think anyone is buying these days, case in point, the $100.00 Cuda Comp with a fresh tune up and new tires is still for sale after 3 months!

    I market is officially dead except for $50.00 or less Cudas, all those ads I’ve found have been deleted by the owners.

    Vinny, you nailed the issue square on the head… SPACE… and my lack of it! I’d take a picture to show you but it’s shameful! It makes me feel good that people have trusted me with their builds but I had to put my foot down yesterday when someone wanted to drop off two more builds. I told my buddy that I’d be happy to help him out but given that are nine builds in front of his two, better count on coming back in a month (and no you can’t “just leave them” here). It seems like I hardly ever set aside time for my own builds, I suppose I could do my stuff instead of riding… yeah right! Getting to ride is the only thing that keeps me doing this madness.

    Maybe a drop bar build for that Specialized project?

    p.s. As far as “that look” goes around the casa, as long as I keep it exclusively to my Smorgasbord singlespeed… clean, no hangin’ parts (derailleurs), and I’m riding it… then I stay in good graces with the misses. ;)

    I can’t believe it but it’s true… Cuda Comp with a fresh tune up for a $100.00 has yet to be snatched up! Amazing!!! Yet plenty of fools are buying up Wallyworld bikes for the same price!

    Going back to Charlie Cunningham (founder of WTB) and Tom Ritchey (MTN god) in the 1970’s up in Marin County… the dirt drop set up offers numerous hand positions. Consider your typical flat bar mountain bike, only one hand position versus four on most dirt drop bars.

    The MB-1 is a recent build, as is another Schwinn Cimarron drop bar conversion. I had the ’88 Cimarron that you’re thinking about, that frame is sanded and ready for paint and that bar set up has been finalized. The ’85 has a Nitto Technomic stem with Nitto Albatross bar (flipped over as drop bars instead of “Townie” comfort bars) added to the full group of 1st generation XT “Deerhead” components with bamboo fenders for a commuter set up. The ’88 has Nitto riser stem and SOMA Sparrow bars with 8 speed STI “brifters” for a pure dirt bombin’ set up.

    I’d say you got a serious steal! Congrats on the fine score… hell, $250.00 would have been a good price for all you hauled in!

    The thing to do after you have the decals ready, rough the surface of the powdercoat with 3M surface prep cloth, a good wipe down, apply the decals, and then some auto body clear sprayed on by a reputable body shop.

    I did the exact process on my track bike and it looks amazing!

    Yep, I rode but as life is what it is, the camera battery was dead when I stopped for a trail pic. F*ck it, I’ll submit a pic of the bike that got me to the top and provided so much joy as I bombed down like my hero Johnny T. (wishful thinking)!!!

    That’s a whole lotta’ coin more than I paid for my daughter’s 12″ Cuda, even after I paid to have it shipped from Durango to SoCal… I still got a deal compared to that asking price. Plus, pee-wee’s Cuda will have a better fork, I have a White Brother’s SC70 just waitin’ to slap on as soon as she has nailed her trail skills to my satisfaction.

    Welcome to the family! Always nice to see a new Cudahead, especially an original owner!

    As Vinny said, there are forks available, I’m a big fan of the White Brothers SC70 and SC72 forks. They are affordable, no specialty parts, all o-rings and such that can be found at your local hardware store. White Brothers moved from near me in SoCal to Colorado and they do still service their forks, you can call up and speak directly to the suspension tech. I’ve run both forks on my Cudas and both perform beautifully with no steering or control issues.

    My dear friend, a long time customer of mine who has me build minimum two bikes a year for him, stopped by to pick up his new whip and as a bonus to me he showed up with a small suitcase full of beer. Lager, Australian style lager to be specific, in 473ml cans (that’s a pint aka almost beer and a half for you non-metric clan). I’m not kidding about the suitcase, it looks like one of those sized for the overhead compartment on a plane, there must be 50 pint cans in the hull. My tip for doing good work as we head into a 3 day weekend of riding. I’m specifically speaking to Terry, Vinny, and Derek (the 3 MuskaCudaheads)… since Derek is riding in the snow…. Terry, Vinny, and, myself have no excuse not to ride and post about it. Big ups for pictures like Derek posted, let’s see ’em!

    That’s great Derek, really cool how the bike came together after giving you so much sh*t! I love the pics, thanks for sharing brother! There is a great thread over on Bike Forums, Everyday Pics, your shots would be perfect for that thread! I’d say check it out, plenty of really cool photos from all over the world as shot by or with a bike. It used to be my favorite thread on Bike Forums but now it’s the Dirt Drop thead, I’m building my third “dirt drop” right now, not sure if I’ll ever ride flat bars ever again (probably just a passing fancy).
