What area can you begin to mock up?I say pick a spot and run with it, you’ll feel like you are progressing, that’s always a mental hurdle for me.
Keep up with the photo documentation too, you’ll have a great pictorial by the time the Colson is done!
C’mon now…

Hey man,That’s a great idea, I hadn’t considered it but it totally makes for the perfect solution to my problem!
Time to comb over Ebay for a double clamp stem, I recall them being big in the lat 90’s when all those heavy double and triple crown forks with 100mm of travel hit the scene.
Thanks again amigo!!!
Peace,

I was thinking of going after all the chips and scratches because they are somewhat centralized around each other and going for the relic’d look (aka fake patina) but I couldn’t make it work since I swapped the fork. No way was I losing disc brakes up front (especially after losing the disc brakes in the rear) to keep the matching paint
fork in hopes of pulling off a fake patina look. Almost everything is getting media blasted and powder coated! After drooling over the bikes on the Vanilla site, I’m going for it… full custom color on the frame, fork, and multiple parts. I need to find a taller stem and some better bars, not sure what it is with those lousy stinkin’ handlebars but they gotta go!!!- February 17, 2015 at 3:23 am

@vpc66 wrote:Like the look of the old layback with the Nana seat, did you buff that frame out because the color pops in your picture unless you just have better photo equipment…looks good ! What crank set up do you plan on running..have seen old profile cranks used that look great by the way ! Cool job D !
Right on, thanks brother! That’s just the stock color in the sun, I’ve never even wiped off the funk that came on the frame when I bought it. It’s a cool color but it’s beat, someone rode around with a metal chain wrapped up, the front portion of the frame and fork are chipped to hell. I haven’t figured out a color yet but I’m thinking seriously about going over the top with the powder coating. It’s only a thought at this point but I’m considering doing the crank arms, seatpost, stem, and bars in the same color as the frame of fork. Maybe that’s a bit much but for sure that seatpost, seatpost collar, and the stem… it’ll look like one big, long continuous bike frame. Oh man, I’d really like the crank arms to match also, that would look amazing with an anodized chainring and a Salt Plus Warlock half-link chain. A Shimano NX01 “oval” chain, like I ran on my single speed, would be cool too but might prove challenging to get the exact length right on with a full link chain as opposed to a half-link chain. I’m pulling some inspiration from the gorgeous Vanilla bikes that Sacha White creates, that is pure bicycle eye candy! If I can pull off this B1 cruiser with hints of “Vanilla” that would be awesome!!!
Here is a link to the SaltPlus Warlock chain and Vanilla Bikes if you’re unfamiliar… dee-lish!

p.s. The SOMA Noah bars would require such a massive stretch while seated of the rear axle, I can’t imagine that the bike would be very comfortable to ride for very long. Like my big plans for a 9 speed cluster with dual disc brake set up, the Noah bars went the way of the Dodo bird.

If any of you Cudaheads snag this deal before it goes away, I have a Rock Shox Sid World Championship fork that matches the blue accent color and would be an ideal light weight suspension fork for this frame.Somebody better hurry… deals like this shouldn’t last this long!!!

No worries my brother… I’ll take any reply that’s bike related. Heck, I’ll take any reply whatever the topic these days! Bring on the silliness, rude & crude, senile ramblings, or dead serious will do too. Let’s see if anyone is inspired.C’mon you Cudaheads!

Hey all-
When I revived this thread (back on page 4) I did so because it had been a year since the initial posting in January of 2014, I want to know what happened to your bike stable during the last year. Being 2015, I want to hear about your plans and future builds too. If you wish to get nostalgic for the CNC 90’s or go way back to your BMX childhood, that would be great! If you can’t find something to share in all that, please start a new thread and say what’s on your mind.
Big thanks to vpc and zoltan for getting in early, looking forward to hearing from the rest of you soon!
Thanks… now get to typing!!!

@vpc66 wrote:Good Times, man I miss those days !
Yeah, I agree but I don’t want to get all nostalgic for a certain time period. That said, there were so many great things happening in mountain bikes for the entire 90’s decade. Frame geometry and frame materials made drastic changes, from basically road bike geometry to sloping top tubes with steeper angles, 1 inch to 1 1/8th inch head tubes, threaded quill to threadless, and any frame material you wanted from steel, alloy, metal matrix, aluminum, bonded metals, titanium, and carbon fiber. We could spend an entire thread going over the evolution from rigid through full suspension but that horse has already run its race. For me though, it was the bike jewelry that really made it come alive… anodized CNC… incredibly beautiful parts in any color you could dream up. Showing up to your LBS to check out the newest colorful gems in the case, it brought back all the excitement I felt when anodized alloy BMX parts first hit the market. Color was king again! No doubt it was eye candy for sure but this time it came with the added improved performance over heavy cast components. That was it for me, brother, I was sold and started gobbling up anything I could afford. Even Uncle Sam helped out, I always took student loans for more than I needed just so I could stock up on the newest and greatest from PAUL, Ringle, Kooka, Nuke Proof, Hershey, etc., etc., etc.. Great times for sure!!!

There were guys that were ahead of their time for sure, the first guy I saw on small rings was John Tomac, but it was specifically for a certain track in one of the national title events. Yet, when he won the Cross Country Mountain Biking National Title he was in a giant road/track ring on a dirt drop set up. Pure animal is my best answer! The equipment was one thing but nothing took the place of simply being a monster mashers… John Tomac, Eric Carter, Brian Lopes, and my buddy Mark Salmon all were BMX National Champs and every one of them could ride the tires off the bike! It carried right over too, Tomac, Carter, and Lopes all went on to be National Champs in mountain biking. My buddy Mark went on to snag national titles in cyclocross and single speed racing. It was always humbling when we would meet back up at is bike shop after taking off together in a group pack, I pulled my best time on a local loop at 39 minutes and I was feeling great! That is until I found out that Mark had done the same loop in 28 minutes with only one gear… a straight up 1×1 ass whooping!!! What was eye opening was when I found out that Mark heading back out for a second loop to collect any stragglers, I felt for those guys. You always knew that you were riding with someone special, struggling to keep your breath, turning over your best gear to keep pace, and you look over to see that he was in his big chainring and telling jokes… *pppfffttt…* deflated and done!!!- January 28, 2015 at 5:11 pm

@vpc66 wrote:Hey Super D , most DJ bikes I have seen run the single brake on the rear, guess they hold to the old BMX standard of a rear brake only. When I was a kid during the early BMX phase that was common and it was a rare sight to see somebody with fronts. You were in the Mother land of the sport during that time, same go for you?
Yeah man, everything was evolving so quickly, it seemed like there was always something new on someone’s bike at the track. Plenty of BMX kids had dads that were machinists or worked in that field in some capacity. All the races I did that Scot “The ‘OM’ King” Breithaupt designed were so technical and steep in places I was always glad I had that front to feather when needed. I had gotten to the point where I was only running a front and so were loads of other racers. The trick riders always had super stout brakes on both ends but those guys were a totally different breed of rider, our paths rarely crossed. Those were some fabulous days and when you added in skateboarding (ramps, pools, and skate parks) and punk music… always seemed like good days, you had a reason to get out of bed other than your mother screamin’ at ‘ya… ha-ha!!!

@vpc66 wrote:Well, I replace the bike my wife called her own with another one ( she still does not ride ) change the chain on the Cuda due to the stretch on the old one and went back to riding real trails with grown ups and lost 20 pounds of fat, built a loaner bike for a buddy or who ever to ride with the gang and this year the Colson will come to life…a build I have wanted to do for sometime in my mind will become real !
Hey man, what are you trying to pull? Gotta have pictures, you can’t expect us “visual” people to survive on words alone, we need pretty photos too! Don’t be stingy with the lovin’!!!

Yeah, that’s for sure!!!
My wife never passes up an opportunity to tell our daughter not to “repeat what your dad just said…” but I figure there’s so much bullsh*t in the world, a little honesty couldn’t hurt, right?
I agree with vpc66, that dirt bike is pretty slick, I’m really digging the single rear hydraulic brake… I know there will be times when you want more brake but those are the precious balls out moments that make you feel alive! Good luck on picking up that ‘Cuda banner and swag from the guy in Germany. You’re the most likely person to get it being it’s already in Europe. Some cool stuff to ad to your ‘Cuda collection, I hope you’re able to make it happen.
Thanks for sharing!

Hey gang,Check it out, it’s been a year since this thread was originally posted, it was all about what you had planned in 2014.
I’m most interested in your bikes of 2014… what did you buy, build, and/or get rid of this past year?
Since it seems appropriate, what bike plans do you have for 2015?
(I’m not getting the ball rolling this time, someone else must post their project, let’s see who is paying attention)
C’mon now… let’s go!!!

@vpc66 wrote:I hope this turns out to be a pretty ride but not to nice due to I like riding my bikes and not hanging them on a wall !
Ha-
You might be able to hang those hubs on the wall but bicycle wall art that Colson will never be… you’d have to double stud the wall to hang that skip tooth boat anchor!!!
Looking good so far!

p.s. Sorry for laggin’ on my end!

Somebody did but not me… my buddy in Phoenix was out of town in New York and he didn’t get home until Wednesday late, so no local pick up and by then the fork had sold. That was a nice score for parts bin for sure! I’ll get the next one, hopefully!
