Hey fellas,I’m always looking for parts, bikes and frames are too hard to sneak but parts can always come out of the bins of spares… even I don’t know what all is in there!
I sure did vpc66, the stems arrived and they are great! I’m not sure if I told you that I bought both, like I need two identical stems, but they are so cool I know I’ll have a build down the line. Thanks again for the heads up!
Speaking of heads up… here is a dandy SDG saddle from way back. The Ti Kevlar Ventura saddles with the “sparkle covers” hit the scene around 1996, so here is a chance to pick up a rare gem. The MSRP was $89.95 but there was such a demand that they were going for a C-note out the door and the king was this one with the patriotic colors and stars. Sure it’s used but so is your Cudas… don’t get bitchy! I’m not bidding as I have no bikes with the color scheme. Someone should take this tasty bit home to your Cuda!

I caught a break as it was a local sale by a female racer who is thinning out her stash. She claims to have an older aluminum race bike with more Kooka parts and other tasty bits from that era that she’d give me first opportunity with the pick of the litter after she tears the bike down. I’m keeping my fingers crossed but I’m not holding my breath. That doesn’t seem like a bad price if you love that saddle, all those SDG Ti Kevlar S X000 series saddles were loved and used back then… mighty rare to find one these days in fine shape. So I have saddle envy, I can admit it!!!

I am more than willing the walk the stroll of shame back to the garage and the offer is quite tasty but I’ll only go there if you include my favorite SDG Ti Kevlar saddle with the deal… you gotta give to get!
Speaking about “the house” I’m keeping quiet about today’s haul…
Here’s the deal, lately, I haven’t been too lucky with Craigslist/Ebay/Yakaz on my bike treasure seeking, plenty of “just sold it” and “someone is on the way over right now” or I get clipped at the auction closing and I was starting to suffer bike depression. Today the bike gods smiled on me again! I scored a black set of Kooka 170mm cranks with Kooka rings, a set of new in the box black Kooka 175mm crank arms, a black Kooka 110mm stem, an ol’skool 1″ Salsa quill stem (my favorite quill brand), and a XTR front derailleur. My depression has lifted… I can now tilt back and enjoy a few bottles Fat Tire Ale… the box I bought came with 12 “friends” to help celebrate the good blessings of the day (as it is the Sabbeth… the black Kooka Sabbeth)!

Vinny is dead on again! Back in 2002/2003 you could go online and pick up a XX Team bike of a Comp new in the box for $199 with $59 shipping and handling. Sure the guy sat on ’em for a decade but $50 a year storage fees is your choice to choke down. I bought a couple and I can tell you with all confidence that those Barraucdas that Ross was blowin’ out the doors had no quality control, yes there were missing parts, and hell yeah they would require a $75 to $100 full tune up at your LBS. I dumped the pair I bought as quickly as I received them. The Cuda Comp that Vinny has, the ones made shortly after the buy out in mid-’96 by Ross are every bit as good as any other Cuda Comp! Same custom extruded tubing, same components, and same emphasis on American quality control… six years later they had been reduced to a sorry representation of their former selves!!! Buyer beware… enough said!- February 22, 2014 at 3:23 am

Man, if this Cuda Comp is your size, this is the one to go after!1st – The seller is clusless! $20.00 shipping is about $80.00 under the going rate for a full bike
2nd – Early Cuda Comp with the Tange Ultimate steel frame is the dream CrMo frame
3rd – The Shimano M-636 are the greatest SPD platform pedals ever made
4th – The Manitou fork is easily serviced but can run compressed as a rigid fork and look uber cool
5th – It would take very little to put this Comp back to stock vintage goodness

Yeah, that’s the problem with these bulk info sites, they always miss models and get the correct dates all screwed up. That said, I still find BBB site as well as Bikepedia and Velobase to be useful. Makes me wonder what it is with 1993 being the magic year where all the history starts… both Bikepedia and BBB start their database with 1993, maybe their owned by the same bike techie.- February 11, 2014 at 4:54 pm

I’m with you on the Rock Shox “noodle” fork that came on the bike, it was swapped out quickly for a White Brothers fork. When I got the Wild Hare last year I swapped out “the noodle” for a Marzocchi Bomber that I had sitting around. The Bomber has proven to be a winner as it matches the rear suspension nicely. If I can find another White Brothers locally I’ll get it and really be in the chips… no good deals lately and I won’t buy sight unseen.- February 11, 2014 at 5:00 am

Hey brother, no sweat about the differing opinions…I rode a Klein Mantra and a Schwinn S-30 at least half a dozen times each and I was miserable. When I rode those bikes I was still fighting in the 225 and under class and that suspension was no bueno for a Clydesdale. Granted you are much more svelte than I but I could see how it would work well for a lighter rider. I did buy a Schwinn 4 Banger (the one with the Mert Lawwill 4 bar linkage rear suspension), it wasn’t a Yeti as I just missed the window, but it was a sweet ride aside from being 29 pounds of heaviness. I sold the 4 Banger and put that money right into buying my first Psycle Werks Wild Hare full suspension. It was 24 pounds of locally made goodness, ideally suited for my local trails. Both the Wild Hare and the 4 Banger frames were made with 6061 T6 aluminum but the Wild Hare could easily be set up for 3.5″ or 4.5″ of travel. One inch doesn’t seem like much but it was amazing how much of a difference it made in the performance on the trails. Oh, and let’s not forget about the 5 pound weight savings! I had the beautiful polished aluminum frame, a few years later I sold it to a riding buddy who always fancied it, he foolishly left it in the bed of his truck when he went into 7/11 and it was gone. I’ve yet to find another polished frame but in the interim I did buy a used gray Wild Hare for super cheap last year. I don’t ride it much but there are some trails I simply can’t ride with my dirt drop rigid bikes nor my hardtail Cuda, so it’s worth having around for when my full suspension buddies plan a ride.
Check the stock specs on my beloved 1999 Wild Hare:
Tasty right ? ? ?

That’s hard to say…I’ve had 3 steel framed Cudas with different sized seatposts:
26.4 – ?
26.8 – My daughter’s ’95 A2Z with Tange MTN (aka one step up from plumber’s pipe)
27.2 – My ’94 A2V with double butted Tange Prestige
29.4 – My ’93 A2L with double butted Tange CrMo
It would seem that your best bet would be to hit up another member on here with an A2E and PM that person and hope… otherwise you have a trip to your LBS in your future. It’s all to do with the grade of tubing and the thickness of the walls. I checked Sheldon Brown’s seatpost database and he only lists a 1995 Cuda Comp as having a 26.4. My 26.4 was red anodized and I used it in a KGB titanium frame, so I have no reference for what Cuda that post belonged to originally.
Good luck!

Maybe we should start our own Barracuda seatpost database… there are my 3 sizes. Anyone else?

Well done amigo, you beat me to posting that obscure XX Cuda, I saw the ad yesterday on Craigslist. The guy isn’t too far from me and I’m off work today thanks to President Lincoln but I cringe at the idea of another project. Plus, that design is a bit of a pogo stick with a lot of power loss in the pedal stroke. That said, that Fox air shock was a nice aftermarket upgrade and I’m sure it improved the performance on the trail. If it was cheaper, it would be wall art. Lucky for me my bike funds are wrapped up in other builds… $51.00 yesterday for 4 “custom” Panasonic decals from the printer to finish my ’88 MC7500 Prestige frame… still feeling the sting!!!- February 10, 2014 at 6:30 pm

I’m somewhat surprised it didn’t get any bids… maybe it was the hideous riser handlebars!!!
