What was it about the Barracuda bicycle that “hooked” you guys? Was it purely aesthetic, performance, a combination of the two? Or could it have been something else all together?

For me it was an ad in a cycling magazine that lured me in to dreams of one day owning a Cuda. Growing up in the hills of WV I spent many hours mountain biking on old and abandoned logging and coal roads. I rode a GT Karakoram, my friends (I only had 2, kind of like today… 😆 ) Specialized Rock Hopper, and a Cannondale M500. We all drooled over front suspension, full suspension, and especially those bad ass Spin Carbon wheels!

When I saw the pic of Lisa Muhich’s rig with those sweet ass Aerospoke wheels (not quite as cool as Spin but close enough!) I was all like ,DANG! I gots to have me one of dem Berry-cuda bikes!

Plus none of my friends had one, plus I thought Travis Brown’s sideburns were kick ass and since he lived in Durango Colorado, where these lustful bikes were made, they too must also be kick ass!

But aside from all the above, there was one other major influence for why I chose Barracuda. I, like most individuals (as opposed to lemmings), want even more what I am told I can’t have or can’t listen to. My parents were quite the music censors growing up, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers were definitely out of the question. I mean seriously, they wore tube socks over their weiners, how on earth could that be good for a young developing mind?!? 🙄

So of course all I wanted to do was get cool tribal tattoos, get ripped as a native american, run down the beach jiggling my pecs, and own a Barracuda bike, just like the one Anthony Kiedis was holding at a trade show in some old Mountain Bike magazine ad. Once I saw that ad, if I wasn’t hooked already (too many fishing Cuda puns I know…) I was now!

    Anyone remember that ad?

Humbling is right. What a freaking stud, and a seemingly cool dude too. I just read an article about JT and his brand of bikes in some cycling porn. His ranch out in CO like sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!

The black and white pic at the top is a cool shot…Drops on the bike and riding hard core, not sure I would feel right running drops but have never tried before.

Yeah, that’s what I thought before I tried it, it’s a different sensation but has its cool points for sure! As far as “Dirt Drop,” that started with Charlie Cunningham (no relation to Richard cunningham from Mountain Bike Action and Mantis Bikes) in the late ’70’s. He is one of the founding partners of Wilderness Trail Bikes (WTB) and was the first guy on the west coast to pioneer the use of aluminum in frame building (same time Gary Klein was doing it on the east coast). Charlie was an aerospace engineer from Berkley and was there at the beginning with all the rest of the developers. He even won some of Charlie Kelly’s Repack races since he was the only guy on an aluminum purpose built bike going up against 50 pound pre-war Schwinn Klunkers. The whole Dirt Drop scene sort of exploded about fives years ago, I think there was even a Dirt Drop bike or two at InterBike in 2006 or 2007. Here is an article in DirtRag that got me pondering a build, since then I’ve built three and I’m piecing together another right now. They make awesome commuters… slack geometry compared to a road frame, fatter tires for safety against potholes, and a more stable platform for racks and/or panniers.

Also Rivendell jumped in with a Dirt Drop specific build called The Atlantis, it’s a tasty bike that has big cred with commuters. My buddy Daniel ordered one last year and he loves it! Here’s a link:

I saw a pic of Jurgen Beneke with one just like this (A2FX) and it was featured in a magazine and reviewed, but it never went into full production. I suspect that the one pictured, was the one the guys travelled around with and sent for reviews, and perhaps there was one or two for Jurgen, but that’s it I think.

If I had my wish, Dave or Jon would be lurking on here and email me, asking to donate it for posterity. I’m sure it’s with one of them, as would be a prototype or two..

    But one can dream, right?
