It is with a heavy heart that I make this post. But after the very first ride after purchasing my 95 XX Team in April 2011, I noticed the seat tube cracking. I immediately got off the bike and parked it. I was hopeful that possibly it was just a paint crack. The crack was initially about 11mm long. After a night of despair, and searching for a repair facility, I consulted with neo_pop_71 for his opinion. The next day, I decided to remove the paint on the crack to verify that it was indeed the aluminum that had cracked. To my surprise, the crack had doubled in length and began to split into a Y crack. I immediately took a 1/16” drill bit to the three ends of the crack. And yes, the crack was in the aluminum, but hadn’t made it thru to the inside of the tube.

    Mixalive… you’re the king of fab’n’restoration ! ! !

That repair was complex, insanely involved, and you totally pulled it off like a champ! Do you feel like you could do anything with regard to a bike frame? How about building some frames? This story has been a blast to follow… especially when you consider the horrid starting point, all you put into building your repair set up, to the beautiful finished product. I appreciate the thanks along the way but as I stated before, this repair fell solely on your steady shoulders! I can say this, I damn proud of you (your hard work and achievement)… it really paid off in a big way! That took some steelie huevos to start cutting into that frame, you rule, brother!!!

Congrats on the fabulous success, you earned it!

    Best regards,

    -D-

    p.s. Now, go build it…

I think the biggest benefit this story has is that we’ve seen it all documented from start to finish, complete with photos. Couldn’t have been a better tutorial, seriously. :)

It was scary but I guess it worked out.

Check out the head tube reinforcement project that I recently posted.. http://barracudabicycles.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=357

I put a good test to the XX Team today at the Rocky Hill Ranch in Smithville, TX. About an 8 mile run through single track. The repair held up well and seemed to hold up to my 215 pounds of lard ass..
I broke my 15 year old CamelBac last week, so I had to install those bottle holders on the bike. It looks like I am ready for battle..

Bike looks great Mix. when I crashed and cracked my rib a few weeks back I wrecked my 15 Y/O camel bak as well. breaking something is always a good reason to get something new!
