That model/era was made by Trek so you could not call it a collectible, and if you have read my post you would know that I am a Sram fan I would say no to that price but if they drop a bit…She is a sweet ride, but like our Cudas..out dated…I would say no higher than $200/ $225, unless you really want the older parts .I love my Avid brake levers, but those 9.0 would go with my Sram parts and look killer !

That Pulse Pro is a ’97 which it matches paint and decals but it could be a ’98. Big V. is again spot on with the mountain bike history… Trek bought the Klein name in 1995 however all Klein production continued on as it had in Chehalis, Washington until 2003, things being what they are the bike has no collectibility in the C&V crowd. He and I will disagree on the value, I think it’s more than a fair price given the new Manitou Tower XC fork and the fact that many of the components listed are aftermarket. This bike screams of a primary rider back in the day but new bike purchases and evolution have reduced this to a back up bike to loan a buddy for some moderate trail use. Vinny is right about the bike being outdated, but given today’s standards… all hardtails are outdated but that doesn’t mean anything if you enjoy the ride of a quality hardtail. I’m thinking you’ve got some Cudas in your stable that are far and away much better bikes. For me, nothing beats the ride of a steel frame made with high end tubing… your Tange Ultimate will be like riding on a cloud while cutting like a razor! I’d finish all of your Barracuda builds and pass on this good deal (but not a steal) unless you’re thinking of this Klein as a loaner or for robbing parts but then you’re stuck with more stuff. In the end of all my ramblin’ on, Vinny and I would both pass. What’s up, you got a hole in your pocket for 90’s bikes???
Bicycle Blue Book has a Pulse Pro in like new condition going for $333 down to $212 in fair condition.

Right on! This posting breaks the 1,000 mark… yeah, I need to get a life!!!- March 7, 2014 at 4:38 am
….Oh trust me..I would (if it was my size) jump on that thing in a heart beat for a ride. But I must say when it comes to riding my bikes now..my cheap gas pipe rigid single speed has far more smooth ride than my beloved Comp with the shock on the front…Neo has turn me into a steel single speed loving fool that scream it out for all to hear..so that frame would turn me off after a few ruff rides .

Ummm… you’re welcome, I think…
Hey Vinny, let’s see some photos of your current single speed set up, I’m curious how you’ve got that thing set up. Plus, I love seeing how other people set up their grab and go bikes as they usually are the most dial’d in bikes in the stable. Hell, not to diminish the fact that I love bike porn, especially those with steel frames!!!
Show me yours and I’ll show you mine…

Last time I heard ” Show me yours and I’ll show you mine ” I was a young kid playing SECRET games with a couple of neighbor hood girls..But I will post my throw together bike that my buddies refer to as my Katty Perry bike due to the TAME color scheme !
This was last picture taking, but a few things have change…I have the yellow and red carbon time pedals on right now that I had laying around ( though both of my knee like the speedplay pedals on the Cuda much better ) and those tires had lay around so long they were falling apart , so I put some old ground control tires I had on..which suck..they are 1.9 so I can’t air down to much plus they suck for traction ….my out of shape worn body can spin them like a blown GTO with old red line tires….I need new rubber on it !
Black Lx canti brakes with Dia Come ss 7 brake levers ( near new looking ), Bontrager 120 stem,Deore XT cranks with Xt Octalink BB..32 tooth hive chainring / 18 tooth on rear, Lx hubs lace to Mavic rims( sorry can not remember model but they are low level ) , Race Face super lite flat handle bar with OURY grips ( gods gift to grips).
If I ever came upon a A2E in the green color with rigid fork ( love that one ) I no doubt would drop this frame and change parts over..though wheel set would need to be much nicer, plus a King Headset and Thomson seat post and stem….calm down Vinnie..sorry got excited.- March 7, 2014 at 5:03 pm
Sweet! That era Specialized was making some really great frames, I still miss my ’91 Stumpjumper Comp (in stock matte gray, not quite as flavorful as yours)… that was one of the best steel frames I’ve ever owned! Are the rear drops semi-horizontal? If not, you must have played around (likely with great frustration) until you found the magic gearing! I spent a whole day fussing with chainrings, cogs, and half links trying to find the illusive magic gearing on my ’92 Zaskar. Even after buying a Shadow Conspiracy half link chain, I was very close but I could never nail the ideal set up.
Thanks for sharing!
Anyone else throwing a leg over a single speeder?
- March 7, 2014 at 5:39 pm
It has semi-horizontal, but the hardrock has a small bridge in the center of the drop out which I cut out and file smooth so I could have more play room to work the gears…I have a 16 tooth for the rear as well but would need to run a half link. She rides great even being the red headed step child HARDROCK…most Specialized guys only have eyes for the upper models made out of nicer tubes…but for a cheap ride I think I have done well !
Coming up with the magic gear clean or with half link is the one thing that makes me uneasy about doing a single speed on a Cuda, because I do not care for the look of a chain tensioner ….plus it is so quiet with out extra mess in the drivetrain ….though I have enough scrap laying around to set up a 1 X 7 or 8 ….another thing from your build post that has me going HUMMM! The only thing you have shown and I know you love, but the look does not click to me nor understand why on a offroad bike is the dirt drop bars…but to each their own, still enjoy the stuff you show .- March 8, 2014 at 12:59 am
I’m right there with you as far as a clean and uncluttered drivetrain… heck, that’s the whole essence of single speed with less to break and more of a pure connection between the trail, bike, and rider. I have a Surly tensioner in the bin somewhere, it worked but every so often it would bind up and slap the chain or worse by throwing the front chainring. The cleanest solution by far is the White Industries ENO eccentric rear hub, I’m waiting on one to show up locally for around $100 and I’m going to snag it. A few friend have the ENO hubs built up to run in their old frames with vertical drops, you set the chain tension using the eccentric axle and then you lock the wheel in place and you are ready to roll.As far as dirt drop bars go, that happened years ago for me… thanks to my hero John Tomac. Tomes won the 1990 World Championships running an early Manitou fork (very familiar to our Cudas) on his Yeti C-26 hardtail and a prototype Dura Ace STI “Brifter” for the rear with a bar end shifter for the front. It more than worked for him as he totally crushed all others on his way to winning the the world! If you think of it from a hand positioning standpoint, you have 4 unique hand placements with dirt drop bars as opposed to the single position with a flat bar. It’s definitely not for everyone but for many riders they never return to a tradition trail set up. The Panasonic MC7500 that I’m finishing up will be my 6th dirt drop bike… just a bit addicted!!!

thanks again. I think that schwinn has been posted for a bit.Now I am thinking of getting the below spooky frame. About time I brought some east coast love to my stable. Something about this brand is calling my name.
- March 8, 2014 at 6:29 pm
Dang, how’d I miss that one? I actively search the East Coast for Smorgasbord, Spooky, and Spot bikes or frames… that one slipped past my radar. A cult following has developed for the early 90’s Yeti killer hardtail, the A.R.C., it was made from the same Easton tubing and had the same riveted cable guides on the opposite side of the top tube. The Spooky Darkside is their tribute to the A.R.C. and they sold a lot of frames even with the $1,200-$1,500 price point ! (Ouch!!!)Now for the warning… go read up on the Darkside on MTBR, 3.5/5 chili peppers… totally a bike that is loved or hated and a brand/co. (i.e. customer service/backing their product) that gets almost no love!

As any Dos Equis Team owner on here can attest, the 7000 series aluminum is notorious for cracking, so you need to do double duty inspecting for cracks in the tubing and welds.
Good luck, I hope it works out!

I just picked it up and am pretty excited to build this one up. I am thinking of putting a 9 speed xtr drivetrain on her and possibly some spinergy wheels.- March 9, 2014 at 3:28 am
OH YEA! Spinergy Spox was the wheelset that I had the hots for when I built my Cuda because the shop owner I bought my frame from had use them for a time. I change my mind when he told me the spokes snap easy and the hubs have issues. So he built my wheelset with King classic hubs and DT revolution spokes lace to Bontrager rims …strength and less weight than the Spinergy. But if you go for them, they are cool and give a bike a look, hope it was just talk and they work for you !- March 9, 2014 at 5:16 am
Hold up Vinny, you negative Nelly, I have used SPOX wheels for years without issue! F*ck it, SPOX are great and I can’t say enough good things about them, I have 26″ mountain sets and 700c road sets… not a single issue to date and I’m a Clydesdale!!! Now, I’m not taking anything away from your King hubs and DT set up, I’d love to have some, but that custom wheelset cost more than many second hand Cudas! All that is a side note Big V., Ron did not specify SPOX, he only stated Spinergy wheels… as I have no faith in carbon fiber… especially 15+ year old carbon fiber wheels… Ron, what Spinergy wheels are you talking about going on the Spooky?
If you are talking about the Spinergy Rev-X carbon blade wheels, please Google search “Spinergy Failure”
Please keep in mind that the image I’ve attached is very mild with little carnage. I watched a set of Rev-X literally go away in front of me (back in the day) during a Clydesdale NORBA race. I was coming up on a lapped rider, he was riding an AMP B-4 with Rev-X wheels (both the B-4 & Rev-X are intended for light weight riders) and this guy was easily 250 pounds. His front got crossed up with the rear in a divot… “Creek” “Ping” “Pop” and the derailleur snapped as his B-4 looked like a soggy noodle… “Crack” “Crack” “Crack” and his rear Rev-X gave way under the lateral pressure and he and the bike balled up into a mess. I stirred hard right and did a bunny hop over his front wheel and continued on. When I came back around on my next lap the med-techs were scratching their heads as to whether or not to pull out the broken carbon blade that had impaled his thigh. Yes, he was plus size and way too big to be riding that set up but that’s the way it was and everyone did that… so, be aware that a used set of Rev-X wheels that gave been “sitting for years” may have been stressed to catastrophic failure potential by some chubby dude that had no business riding them in the first place. To that I add, for the last 10 years every “Fixie” kid has wanted a carbon wheel on his “whip” so keep that in mind too!

those were the ones. I am glad i asked as I am, close to 200 lbs (i like t say pure muscle to those that never saw me).Part of me is relieved as no I don’t have to spend $300 – 400 on those.
The more I spec out this bike the more interested I am in the Klein that started this thread. The xtr brakes alone are going to run me close to $100
BTW their is a spooky junebug frame on EBAY ending soon…seems a tad pricey though and a beautiful spot frame.

But ” D ” the spokes on Spox are made out of carbon and to my knowledge …now I never HAD a set but I was told they could and have ( the bike shop owner ) snap while riding plus have read things about them on the internet…. BUT …. I did write that so he would know there were stories about them and at the end wish luck. I am sure not every item on one of those DO NOT BUY LIST will have the issues folks claim, as you have been lucky with yours and remember my wheelset…folks cry about revolution spokes plus my set has alloy nips and Ti skewers, and god forbid radial lace spokes on king hubs..Everything folks cry about and I wanted the rear to have the non-drive side radial but TED ( shop owner ) refuse to do that…All these years later and they are still tight and true.
By the way, show pic’s if you have any of your rides with the spox…just because I chicken out of using them does not mean I lost my love for their looks !
