Oh man, what a bust!Dang Mix, you got some chain bustin’ power in those sexy gams!!!
That happened to me once… only once… I never ride without my Topeak Alien tool and a universal masterlink. It’s happened twice since that first “learn your lesson” and the Alien with the link got me home. Never walk out again!
If you can find the first generation Alien tool used, buy it! That’s the one I have, it’s been perfect every time, and I’ve had it for 12 or 15 years. The best tool ever, I had many, and the Alien spanks them all!

6 pack of KMC 8 speed (5, 6, 7 speed are the same width) U-link from BikeWorldUSA via Amazon for $2.40… great price!

Hey Mix,Here is a link to a completed auction on Ebay for a used original Alien tool…
$26.00 with 12 bids and $9.99 s/h
So, you can see the original has a loyal following. I can’t speak to the quality of the newer stuff but the original is bombproof!

Lame sauce. Never broke a chain. I did have a derailleur get wrapped up in some spokes one time, rookie mistake throwing my bike in the back of a buddy’s truck and didn’t notice it till it was too late. I call it a “Stupid Tax.”How did it happen? Old chain? Just cranking up a hill? Not pressed correctly?

Thanks for the info, Dude..
It was a fairly new chain. I think messed up the press process..- December 17, 2012 at 1:07 am
Yeppers…I carry the small park tool chain breaker and a few Sram master links in my Camelbak…never leave home with out it.- December 17, 2012 at 5:25 am

Derek just be glad Don did not post some of his trade mark photos and leave it at him writing sexy legs 😆- December 17, 2012 at 2:41 pm
Do any of you guys use the master links for normal usage? I have always pressed them.- December 17, 2012 at 3:13 pm
I have Sram chains on most of the bikes…there are a couple of odd balls in the group which force me to use the chain cleaner unstead of being able to take chain off easy and slosh it around in a pail and brush if needed with cleaner then set in the sun to dry out before relube…I use dry lube so my chains do not get real nasty, just need to relube more often.- December 17, 2012 at 8:27 pm
Currently I am not using any quick links but I have in the past and would like to now but don’t have any reason to add one at the moment. Being able to take the chain off is a plus for me and I have never had any issue with chain breakage from a quick link, from not pressing it right yes, but from a quick link….nah.- December 20, 2012 at 1:29 am
I was looking at that chain on the CudaComp today.. And no wonder it broke. It was the same chain that was on it when I bought the bike. I thought I had replaced it, but it had some piece of crap HP chain..- December 21, 2012 at 4:30 am
Boy, now there’s a new one for me… never heard of HP chains out of Taiwan. I saw your previous posting and when you said “HP” chain, I assumed you meant it was a Shimano HG chain that most 7 and 8 speed grouppo ran back in the day. KMC is from Taiwan and they make nearly all the chains for everyone aside from Campy, sorry to bust your bubble if you’re a Shimano or SRAM fan. That’s a bizarre chain, I’ve never seen one like it before… why would they stamp press the links to have strength in the center when that area has some of the least friction in the drivetrain?
