http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/bik/2924270450.htmlBarracuda Full Suspension XC Mountain Bike – $100 (Newton)
“Older full suspension (front and back shocks) Barracuda mountain bike for cross country use. Bontrager tires, aluminium frame, recommended for riders 5’7 and under. Will most likely need some minor tweaking and lube on chain. willing to negotiate price”
This kid is really optimistic that Ebay will bring him some ‘Cuda cash, he was willing to negotiate on the price when it was only $100.00 for the complete bike! Nice try… ๐

You think they copyed a Schwinn sweetspot just a little…..Jezzzz- April 11, 2012 at 7:55 pm
vpc66, I agree with you on the copied frame design but I think it goes back one more level to the Catamount bike. In 1996 Catamount came out with what they called a U.R.T. (Unified Rear Triangle) M.F.S. (Mid-Frame Suspension). The Catamount URT MFS came is 3 levels (XTR, XT, and LX for obvious “Shimano” reasons)… the XTR cost $3,50000, the XT cost $2,750.00, and the LX cost $2,350.00. Schwinn did have a 1996 Homegrown with a “Sweet Spot” frame design but I think the Schwinn designers stole the idea from the 1994 Catamount prototype that previewed at Interbike. The bikes are certainly similar in design but the Catamount was considered a race ready bike, I would not say that about the ‘Cuda or the Schwinn.-D-

In its day the Sweetspot which became the S series was their Xc full suspension race bike. I still have mine though It has been set up for my wife to ride, she did not like the little hard seat as she called it or the heavy rack to the handlebars so a big soft seat was put on and a tall riser stem. But the thing rides great and locks out when out of the saddle as they claim . I have the older model which became a carbon frame in the later years. Side note..they used it on a cop show called Pacific Blue but after the first year lost out to the Trek Y fs.- April 12, 2012 at 12:54 am
I built up one of the Cuda XCs FS frames, picked it up from Big Al up in NY. As I mentioned in an earlier thread that was the steel frame I tried the rear disc adapter with. I think that frame weighs like 9 lbs or something absurd! The POS ShockWorks shock probably weighs 2!Cool looking bikes though, I would pick one up if I could find the right size!
Even though Al primarily handled Ross Cudas he sure did have some good looking frames. Anyone know about his supplier?

Mark, this site’s Grand Poobah, may have more insight but I heard Big Al gobbled up all the ‘Cudas he could in a sale as Ross was blowing them out the door before they outsourced everything. Maybe it has some truth or it could just be a ‘Cuda (urban) legend.-D-

Hadn’t heard of this buyer in particular, but there are a bunch of similar stories all over, both from the original “fire sale” in 95, and then when Ross dumped a bunch in that era.I got my 97 from a guy in Florida who was ebaying them with great success and had a warehouse full. This was sometime in 2000/01.

FYI, i’m the eBay seller for this cuda cat. what happened: drove to Boston & bought the bike. after realizing how godawful heavy it was, tried recouping my initial investment on eBay (epic fail). so now i have one boat anchor frameset w/some leftover useable parts. anybody want it for like $50?what i’d really like is an A2Fast (if i could find one).
thx for reading my tale of woe & stupidity ๐ ๐

I like the look of the A2Fast better, but it’s still not a light frame, as it was all cromoly steel and reinforced a bit to accomodate the linkage. I believe built up, it’s still a 27-29lb bike.- April 15, 2012 at 2:26 am
Heck you might as well keep the thing for rides around the neighborhood and when you can pick up a good hardtail for a go fast lite ride…Safe bet you will not bump into another one of those riding around…- April 15, 2012 at 3:38 am
@vpc66 – i have no interest in keeping this thing. the goal is actually to build up one semi-lightweight bike for all purposes. granted, it’s in decent shape & could still be set up as a SS or beater freeride rig. just doesn’t fit my needs right now. 50 clams & will throw in the ESP 5.0 rear derailleur too…yeehaw.
@Mark – not too concerned about the A2Fast’s weight. that’s pretty close to my last full suspension bike, a 1995 FSR Team, which weighed 27.5 lbs.so, anyone have an A2Fast or 17″ steel hardtail frameset to sell?

Hey jcw_mtb,
Man, we’ve all done the exact same thing… maybe some woe but no stupidity!
I saw your new ad on Craigslist…
http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/bik/2958907688.html
…cheeky devil, referencing the old Catamount frames in your description!
This one is not mine but it popped up near me the other day, I could inquire for you if you’re interested. Obviously, it’s been repainted but who knows, it could be a Comp or an A2X.

Let me know if you want me to hit the seller up about what model is under all that paint.

Okay jcw_mtb, check out this sweet deal in your backyard:http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/bik/2952220369.html
Here’s the info in it from Bikepedia:
Don’t sleep on this deal, only $75.00 for a seriously legit race bike back in the day! A new quality bike was $750 or so, the RS60 was twice that price! It was made in Japan from Tange Prestige, just like the Stumpjumper. The Paramount had a nicer ride and was higher end as far as frame construction because it was a lugged frame (like the early Stumpjumpers) instead of being tig welded like the Stumpjumpers from the same era. You will not find a nicer hardtail for the price!!!
Good luck and if you’re going to pass, please say so because I’d like to have it!

p.s. You could probably unload the the blown Paoli fork on Ebay for what you pay for the bike frame… uber rare high end race fork. You could always keep the fork and rebuild it, here’s a link to the rebuild kit:
http://www.spi-parts.com/paoli-shock-rebuild-kit.html
(It’s almost as much as the bike! ๐ฎ )

@neo_pop_71 – thx for the heads up on that Paramount. i already contacted the guy & left 2 phone messages yesterday alone. haven’t heard back yet. meantime, still looking for something to fit the bill. also, thx for the offer to contact the OC Barracuda seller. i need to get my ass out out there so such bargains can be more easily accessible (planning to move west ASAP).the search continues…

bought the Paramount todayalthough when i considering its fairly clean condition, perhaps a trade is in order for something a bit more well-worn. my goal is to build up a daily driver, not a museum piece. anyone have an a2fast or other steel Tree Amigos hardtail in a 16.5 -18″ size to swap?
